What do people think of the new HBO vampire series based around Monroe and Shreveport. Is this a first for this area

I thought it was just Shreveport, I didn't know Monroe was in it as well.

To be honest, I think it's rather retarded. It's nonsensical vampire fiction. Either way, when the movies, commercials, TV series, etc first came to this area I thought it was really cool. Now, to be honest I don't really care. It makes no difference to me that they're here.

OMG.

I stumbled over that show very recently and it had my attention until they started referring to the vampires in Shreveport. I lost it. It was so hideously cornball of a suggestion that it ruined the whole show for me. I guess being from there and knowing it so well, the idea of this town being the location for a vampire residency was about as absurd and ridiculous as putting the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City Arizona - and then casting David Hasslehoff in some modern age Jack the Ripper flick. Just ludicrous even for a theme for a show in Shreveport. It wrecked my ability to suspend belief!

It would've been way more accurate, in my opinion, to instead make a series about people in Shreveport/Bossier who are generally assbackwards, repressed, idiotic, irrational and generally unstable (so it's believable!) suddenly finding themselves face to face with a strange Vortex that appears over the old Hamel's park amid the storm clouds, and spits out people it hijacked from some other cool location. Vortex Of The NonLiving...the water supply is contaminated, Vortex is a regular event, military base turned zombies...it would totally work so much better and maintain a modicum of realism

But vampires?

Sookie whatever is so totally unbelievable as a born and bred Louisianian, even the accent doesn't work - she's totally doing east Texas, not north/central and especially south Louisiana. I look for that show to get the axe in record time because it's just so absurd. And truth be told, people anywhere in that state would be far more accepting of vampire/human relations than black/white - they're still way skittish about interracial stuff all over the state and most guys consider a white girl "ruined" if she's been known to hook up with a black guy. If it's not the completely ridiculous notion of vampires in the city that kills this show, it'll be the sheer discomfort it spawns in locals over the easy, casual, "regular norm" suggestion of interracial ties...it is not common there and the locals absolutely do shun it to this day. Why ya think Louisiana went to McCain despite its huge black population? Unless that was the objective then okay. But I can't imagine who they thought their demographic is - Joe the redneck might get a kick out of anybody making a show in Shreveport, and watch it to see where about the shots are located, but soon as the black girl makes out with the white guy, the vampire theme will be lost to his repulsion and he's gonna change the channel to NASCAR.

Personally, a show with vampires in Shreveport would've had far more appeal if the vampires were gay - huge demographic there, including the goths and new agers in the city...but when the novelty of any show being shot in Shreveport wears off, no matter what it might be, then all the locals will see is the interracial aspect and that's when the producers get protested out of town - it's a built in show stopper for the mentality of the people in that area.

Just FYI there is a "vampire" subculture in Shreveport, so it's really not so far-fetched. Far-fetched in regard to the fabled blood-sucking vampires to which we've all become accustomed, but not far-fetched in regard to those who dress in black, drink the blood of others, and gather in the dark alleys of the city at night. I once walked right into a gathering of this kind and, I must say, they're actually rather friendly. But they do exist. And I'm not talking about "goths".

As mentioned on the other thread, personally somebody should get on the ball - it's long passed high time someone made a horror flick involving nutria rats. It'd go over tons easier than vampires in La.

I wasn't referring to any subculture, who aren't necessarily large enough to impact the actual culture one way or the other. Do you mean the ones who hang out at Joe's? Centenary area? If so, I might need to debate that suggestion it's a subculture - more like poser culture...most of whom are deluded in more ways than one. However, (and again, if so), the costume works are amazing. Last time I was at Joe's this one gothic Peter Steele sort strolled up like something out of Ann Rice novels...and superficially it was quite cool and novel. After about 15 minutes in it swiftly became ridiculous, contrived and retarded. Is this the same "subculture" vamps heavily into bdsm?

The general mentality of the area is just a little too repressed to embrace interracial homosexual minglings (hence the flip plot to begin with, which is supposed to be irony I guess?) when the novelty of movie making people being in town wears off. If they can pull the demographic, more power to them but my prediction is this show will be ripped and shooting in La halted before you can say count chocula. Can't speak for Monroe but Shreveport just aint ready to grow up that quick, despite the casino jingling...

As far as where they hang out, I have no idea. I haven't encountered them in about a decade. "Poser culture" is probably a good word, considering there is no such thing as a real vampire, but what I remember of them was that they weren't kids. Back in the 90s the ones I saw had to be in their 30s and 40s, so they would obviously be older now. Perhaps someone who has played one too many games of Vampire: The Masquerade. No idea about BDSM, or whatever other sexual deviance they might be into.

As far as I know they're building it on Douglas Street, but I admit I haven't been by there to see. Supposedly ground was broken in April. I might have to shoot an email to Alex Kent and ask what he knows. While there are a few films in production here right now, things have been pretty tense ever since Josh Brolin was arrested for a fight that never really happened. Shreveport needs to clean up its corrupt police force before welcoming movie stars to the city.
