Keep Louisville/Portland Weird? (appointed, buying, to live)

I've noticed that Portland, OR has the whole "Keep Portland Weird" thing going on and it's basically identical to what we've got here in Louisville. They even mention things on their site (KeepPortlandWeird.org -) like "Art Cars" and "Zombie Walks", which I know are also popular here in Louisville.

So where did it originate? Louisville was the first place I'd heard of that had a "keep whatever weird" campaign, so I was under the impression it was a local thing. Or is this just a buy local initiative that a lot of cities are getting into? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Let me help you. Austin invented the slogan. Louisville copied them. And then Portland copied Louisville and Austin. Then basically a bunch of others jumped on the bandwagon, but these three cities are the originators, and the coolest by far of the cities with the slogan. Also, it is these three cities that display the slogan prominently. Indy has one? I had no idea, and I used to live there.....

Very interesting, I just found this thread while searching google on the 'Keep Louisville Weird' mention of another thread.

I lived in Portland in 1997...and 'Keep Portland Weird' wasn't there. Must be fairly new, or at least within the last decade, and probably much more recent than anything.

The AUSTIN has always been famous, and the only city I know of that had it. It's great that Louisville is doing the same theme. It's a great theme.

I also looked at some other websites, and there is a keeplouisvileweird website, talking about buying locally compared to chains. Apparently, if someone spends $100 at a local store, $45 remains in the community, whereas $100 at a chain restaurant/store, only $13 does.

Okay, great thread...also interesting that Louisville is second behind Austin, and Portland must be a distant 3rd city to copy it. Both Austin & Portland are GREAT cities...Louisville is smart for using these cities as models! (As opposed to cookie-cutter typical sprawl with little mini-Phoenix cities as is sadly the norm these days).

Well, being somewhat new to the area, I must say that the "support your local business" seems very alive here in Louisville.

while austin does embrace good qualities, austin is also VERY VERY sprawly itself.

I am a Portland Oregonian and those bumper stickers started showing up a couple of years ago.
The funny thing is, nobody here connects it with a buy local business movement.
They just want Portland to be weird. As in strange weird.
And it's trendy to have one of those next to your COEXIST, Rainbow and Obama bumper stickers on your Subaru Forester.
