New housing & retail at UofL!!! (tenants, construction, university)

Its currently under construction. I believe the first phase will have around 300 units. The second phase will open by 2012 with around the same. There has already been many signed tenants for retail including Jimmy John;s Comfy Cow, Qdoba, a bike shop, Papalino's Pizza, and several others I cannot recall.

I moved from that area in 2008 (I used to walk by Masterson's several times a day) and was surprised they went out of business. Now that they are gone there is a huge lot right across the street from the university. I'm glad they will add some much needed retail and eats there, I wondered why they didn't do that with Bettie Johnson Hall (completed in 2000).

U of L has been on a building binge of late, especially by adding new student housing. Smaller projects that are actually needed aren't being affected as much by the economy, it's the big projects (huge skyscrapers) that are falling through. A bad economy means more people enrolling in college.

I think they took over the Masterson's restaurant to build this from what I heard.

Masterson's didnt go out of business. They took a large amount of money from this developer to move. They will move their catering operation to Irish Hill where it is now, and they have decided to quit doing daily lunches. They were just offered too much money to pass up. UofL is on an impressive growth spurt that will only continue and means nothing but a better educated workforce and more jobs for the city.
