My favorites are:

Indi's on Broadway (best fried chicken in the South)

Chicken King on Broadway (good chicken also)

A Touch of Soul near Ft. Knox (great BBQ)

Zaxby's (a treat coming from Virginia where there are none)

Beef O'Bradys

I've lived in Lexington 2 years now and the restaurants I miss are...

Windy City Pizza - a authentic Chicago style pizzeria just south of U of L on 4th Street.

Check's Cafe - the food is pretty good but the atmosphere is priceless. It just feel like the "real Louisville", being in a working class German neighborhood (it's off Burnett Street in Schnitzelburg). The chili is good.

My Faves:

Shiraz Mediterranean Grill, Frankfort Ave. (THE best falafels anywhere--I could eat these daily and never tire of them) INEXPENSIVE

Porcini's, Frankfort Ave. (Amazing food, intimate atmosphere, a bit pricey--but worth it!) PRICEY

Del Frisco's, St. Matthews (BEST steak ever!!! Boozy owner-waitress--a total hoot!) PRICEY

Kashmir, Bardstown Rd. (Awesome Indian food and a very good wine list to boot) INEXPENSIVE

J. Gumbos, Frankfort Ave. (Their beignets are PERFECTION, however their lunch/dinner menu is seriously lacking (I'd rate it a 3, Po boys are good though, breakfast menu is good also. It's worth going for the beignets and coffee alone--trust me!!!) INEXPENSIVE

I am going to grape leaf tomorrow with my Mom

I LOVE Kashmir which last time I checked was closed due to fire. I was introduced to Indian by my husband and I love it. My newest love is meditteranean. I have switched to a healthy lfiestyle, including my diet so most of my dining experiences are ethnic like this these days.

I second Shiraz.. there is one on Poplar level too, as is a J Gumbos. Their chicken kabobs and tabbouleh salad are wonderful!

missymom, I like their chicken kabobs too! I haven't tried their tabbaouleh salad--I'll give it a whirl next time I'm there. Have you tried the fatoosh salad? It's one of my favorites and the 1/2 size is usually huge and very filling all by itself. And their hummus is out of this world. What do you like to order at the Grape Leaf? I haven't been there in years--I'm going to make it a point to go there again soon. I'm all about the healthy eating too.
My husband thinks Kashmir is open for business again.
