My wife and I are looking in to moving to the Kentuckiana area. We are looking at possibly living in Indiana and working in Kentucky. The problem is we have heard that if you work in one state and live in the other you pay state taxes to both states and if you are working in Louisville and live in Indiana your taxes are even higher due to the city taxes etc. that you are responsible for. Is this true ????

Any feedback would be appreciated?

Lightbulb Taxes and you

Here are so good links and replies from a previous thread that will help answer your question --
1) //www.city-data.com/forum/louis...orked-tax.html

2) //www.city-data.com/forum/louis...axes-help.html

Also - see below:
In short, you will pay taxes and some of those taxes are undeserved and you will have to file for refunds (yes plural).

You'll pay property taxes in the city and state (in Indiana). You would have to pay payroll taxes to the city of Louisville a municipality tax of 1.25% along with pay federal income and local sales taxes.

I've posted a few threads on this topic - quick search of two of them: //www.city-data.com/forum/kentu...ighlight=taxes

and
//www.city-data.com/forum/louis...ighlight=taxes

For your questions, the term used is 'occupational tax' and it's all about WHERE you WORK. In the county=taxed, any other county= no tax. The city takes the amount directly out of your salary. For your husband, no 'occupational taxes' will be taken out since he WORKS in Shepherdsville. I don't know about filing local taxes. The link below (page 2) describes when you do or don't. Normally, for people that don't live in the city but work in the city, they don't file city taxes - they just review the city taxes that were taken out during the previous year. One exception is if you travel - in short, if you didn't work a business day IN the county, you can start to itemize your pay and get back each day of city taxes that were taken.
