Living Advice (incoming law and med students) (Louisville, Germantown: apartment complexes, rent)

My significant other and I are moving to Louisville around July/August. We'll both be U. of Louisville students, but the Med and Law campuses are a couple of miles apart.

1) Can anyone comment on the safety of the area between the two campuses?

2) Is there anywhere that would be a good place to live between the two campuses? Or should we just plan on living further out east in the city?

What will be your transportation methods? I'd look seriously at the lower Brownsboro Rd. area if one of you will have a car. The bus between Clifton and Med center is very solid, but to UL Law is going to require a vehicle.

Nothing between the campi works for me at all. You can also live in the Germantown area and bus to both locations fairly well, but night classes might have limited bus scheduling.

Completeley disagree. Downtown and Old Louisville are very viable options for the OP. Lower Brownsboro is a thing of the past, a place where realtors in the 90's advised people who were scared of the "dangerous downtown." (I really cannot stand those suburbanish apartment complexes on river road and zorn like River Hill) I would advise the OP to look near either campus and focus on downtown and Old LOuisville. I would also look at the lower Highlands, Germantown, and Butchertown.

Hey guys...currently a medical student/resident doing a rotation at Louisville now.
My ex is a law student.

I agree with the above poster. Try Old Louisville (older housing with lots of character), downtown, or you could even try the highlands if you feel like it. One thing about the medical school...if you drive, you will be parking far away and walking to class/clinic. There aren't too many good parking options there. So public transport/biking/walking would be perfect.

My ex used to walk a few miles from Old Louisville to her law classes. I would bike to the hospital.

The reason we were hesitant to look in between the law and med campuses was because we had heard it was between an area called "smoketown"--allegedly one of the worst areas in the city. Would living in Old Louisville provide a safe commute/walk for my girlfriend who would have to walk from there to the med campus?

As for parking on the med campus, we went to the medical student admitted day at Louisville and they said there was parking available in the medical school campus garage for only $300/year.

And incidentally, did you do both your medical school and residency at Louisville? If so, what did you think? Was it easy to stay in Louisville for your residency?

Went to UL Law in the early 1990s and lived in Old Louisville. Easy Walk to the Law School, I would go days at a time not getting into my car. I never really worried about my safety walking to the campus, although if I had ventured further North towards downtown that wopuld have changed.

There are many lovely areas in the Louisville metro. St Matthews, which is about 25 minutes east of the city has a lot going on for young people. You can rent a decent place for around 800 or so. It is also very safe in that area...There are some developments off of Breckinridge Lane. There is also public transportation to downtown. Best of luck with your relocation!

My wife and I just bought a house in Schnitzelburg which seems like a great place to be. Only two miles from the med school, so I plan on biking in as often as possible. It's a neighborhood community in the truest sense.

Please define what you think "worst areas of the city" means.

It's all a matter of perspective. You don't mention where you're moving from. If you're used to a city like New York or Chicago, then you'll feel very safe in Louisville. That said, like most other small/medium sized cities, there are definitely areas of Louisville that you or your girlfriend might not feel safe walking at night alone.

If you can swing it, the best bet might be to spend time here before you have to move, talk to the people who live here and walk the neighborhoods for yourselves. I'll bet that within a few days you'll have it sorted out.

Sorry to reply so late. It will be a little difficult to walk from Old Louisville to the law school and the med campus, but doable. I think you will not want to walk in the very cold winters in Louisville. My ex used to do that, but she also bikes to school.

Smoketown is not one of the worst areas in the city...ha! It is fine!

I wouldn't pay for the school campus garage btw. There is lots of street parking if you don't mind walking an extra few blocks.

I did medical school in Louisville, did about 2 years of residency in Louisville/Cleveland...now moving to the west coast to continue...a different situation.
Residency in Louisville is dependent on the specialty you are going into...you can send me a message if you have any specific questions.
