My family and I will be moving to the Louisville area mid-May 2011. I will be working at the VA Medical Center. We are planning to rent initially and would hope to spend around $900 or less monthly for a single family home. I do not mind a commute of 20-30 minutes for the right area/home. We have two children who are 6 years and 3 years and, as of now, prefer public schools. We are really looking for more of a small town feel. We don't really mind driving 15-20 minutes to do major shopping at Walmart, Target, etc. if there is some shopping available for little, in-between things. We are an interracial couple; I am white and my husband is black. We would like to be close to a library and be in a town where there are extra curricular activities that the kids can be involved in.

We also were wondering if there is much cost of living difference between the Louisville area of KY and Indiana....

Thanks in advance for all the help!!!

Default Thanks

Thank you for your response! I've been searching a bit on craigslist. Unfortunately, every time I find a house that looks like a possibility, I search for registered sex offenders in the area, and there are so many!!!! Even starting with a distance of .25 miles, there are 5-10. This really concerns me with two small children!!!!!

Yes, LaGrange has the highest registry of sex offenders in maybe the nation, but do not worry, they are all in-prison. LaGrange has four prisons (on one reservation). One includes the Kentucky Pyschiatric Prison. You will also find a youth reformatory, a bad-boys pen, and a low risk reformatory for men who did bad checks, failed to pay child support, and committed other non-violent low-grade crimes.

We all feel very comfortable living in close proximity to those prisons. I know of only one escape in many many years. That guy was quickly recaptured. Two idiots decided a good way out was in the trash. They found them quickly in the landfill in a rather flat position.
