Cool. Looks like you moved to Dallas. Thank you for the heads up about the Humana discount! I noticed that St. Francis apartments give discounts to Humana employees, but, I didn't know other apartments do that, too. Is it about like $50?
uh, about that whole "hippie" thing. the highlands has a huge hippie culture. don't let that scare you away though, as it is definately the most diverse area in the entire city. doctors, lawyers, hipsters, punk rockers as well as hippies are indigenous to the highlands. everyone is pretty open minded and accepting of everyone else.

Haha, I see. But, I'm sure it's more toned down than Austin. But, as long as, the neighborhood is vibrant and pretty down to earth, I will be cool with it.

So, which street is exactly Nulu? I read it's around east market street or something.

That's awesome. that is the biggest thing I am looking forward to, actually. I really don't like the fact that everything is so spread apart in Texas. I'm sure it will be more dense and walkable in Louisville~~

Yep- moved to Dallas, but moving to Austin in August.
The Humana discount varies-- it generally includes some of the following:
1. lower or zero deposit
2. waiver of application fee
3. some type of concession, up to one month of free rent.
4. percentage off of market rent
Usually apartments that participate mention a "corporate rate". Have a copy of your offer letter for proof.
Good luck, and please be careful driving. That drive from Texas to Kentucky sure is something I don't like to do....

Thank you. I will surely be careful driving those 1000 miles.

So, I've been looking at craigslist lately. Most of the listings are in Old Louisville. But, I found a couple of listings in the Highlands area.

What would you say about these areas?
Maryland X Cowling
loc: Maryland at Cowling Louisville KY US - Google Maps

Barret Ave X Highland Ave
loc: 1196 Innis Ct. Louisville KY US - Google Maps

What are some areas of Old Louisville to avoid? Also, are the car break-in's prevalent over all of Old Louisville, or concentrated in certain areas (don't want my insurance to skyrocket)?

Thank you so much for your help guys!

I think being the state capital also gives a big boost to cities like Austin, Indy, Nashville, Raleigh, etc. Maybe 1/3 of state workers in Frankfort live in the metro area & nearly all of that is in Shelby Co.

NW Lexington has been transformed from a white trash cesspool to a really affluent area since 1990 because of it's proximity to the capital, just 17 miles away from there.

east market is the heart of it. look on google maps and you will see the amount of reataurants and art galleries on that street. one thing to consider is that neighborhood is kinda sparsely populated right now. everyone moved away by the 80's but people are starting to realize what a cool place it is and the residential aspect is growing.

i do prefer the highlands to any other place in louisville, hands down.
I travel a lot and have found very few cities to have such a cool vibe in one place.

For Old Louisville, for lower car insurance rates live in the 40208 zip as opposed to 40203. 40203 is more likely to include more problematic areas.

Going to KY, your insurance will skyrocket no matter where you live. KY is a no-fault state. It is known for having some of the highest premiums. When I moved to Texas from KY, they told me my new premium. My response was "Is that monthly?" They responded, "No, that's for 6 months."
Additionally, it is very expensive to license a car in KY. My renewal in KY was always $400+, whereas Texas is around $100.
Just wanted to let you know ahead of time. Try to tell your insurer about taking the bus to work, and that should lower your premiums some. I found that the Farm Bureau had lower rates than the others. Hope this helps.
