11. Louisville-Elizabethtown-Scottsburg, KY-IN - Christopher Helman - Forbes

I am not surprised by the rankings of the California cities on this list (save for San Diego.) Likewise, I'm not surprised by Louisville's ranking.

Yeah, there were some days this summer that were absolutely awful. Hopefully they will get something done with those power plants on the west side. On the bright side, I've seen some awesome sunsets through the haze

I remember reading thru some air quality lists a few years ago and seeing how bad it is there. Why is that?

I'm not totally sure of the factors, but one big one is the fact that Louisville is in a river Valley. All kinds of stuff gets trapped there.

I will never forget.........several years ago.... there were clouds and rain that moved in, and John Belski (as well as all the other weathermen at the time,) said it would blow outta there within a few hours............didn't happen.

Next explanation was that those clouds got "caught up" in the River Valley (syndrome.) There is some sort of Problem there regarding air quality: smog, allergies, etc. Everything seems to get trapped up there.

There are some really gross power plants on the west side of town along the river that spew a lot of stuff into the air which then gets trapped in the river valley and spread across Louisville. Also, there is a lot of pollen and other allergens in this area which makes it bad.

Old coal power plants, oil refineries, mills, and extreme auto-dependency.

The oldest coal plants should be replaced with natural gas and it should have happened ages ago. That would have helped out quite a bit. Once again, nothing is ever done because big coal and their lobbyists have lots of influence.

Nah.....I'm going with River Valley Syndrome. It's just too small of a city to have Big City Bad Air......not THAT many power plants, etc. Stuff just gets trapped up in that "bowl."
