Me and a friend are meeting up in Louisville basically to drink beer and shoot pool for 36 hours (okay, we might bowl a few frames too, and possibly even hit the bourbon trail). A few years back we did this and found a spot called the Barret Bar where the tables were large and very nice and the atmosphere was perfect for us- rock music playing on the jukebox, sports on the TV but clearly not a sports bar, PBR indie feel, laid back and friendly.... I hear they closed or re-opened under new management, mixed in some coin-op tables-- possibly spoiled what I considered to be a perfect, if not somewhat hidden, neighborhood gem. Is there anywhere else in or near downtown that is similar to the old Barret Bar in terms of ambience and pool table quality that might be worth checking out? Thanks for any suggestions.

Barret is back open and a little less "divey." To get that divery feel you may try Come Back Inn or Cahoots, or Backdoor, all in the lower highlands.

Bankshot Billiads is squarely downtown on Market and is pretty divey, but not all that popular.

The new Barret Bar is open and thriving. It still retains the old vibe, just a little cleaner. I think Mag Bar would also fit your criteria, and Diamond Billiards has just opened a place at the former Jillians on Barret.

Thanks. We ended up back at the barret bar. That place still rocks even though they got rid of the 9 foot Diamond table.
