I'm a 20 something looking to move to Louisville, KY. I'm looking for a affordable apartment in a hip/trendy part of town. Proximity to public transportation for school and shopping/restaurant district (for employment). Does anybody have any recommendations for location and how to go about finding a place?

There have been many posts on this before. In general, Highlands, Old Louisville, NuLu, Butchertown, Clifton, Crescent Hill, Downtown, Germantown, and the "heart of St Matthews" (intersection of shelbyville with breckenridge Lane) will fit your vibe.

I would probably lean towards the Highlands, with an emphasis on the Cherokee Triangle or Bonnycastle sections of that neighborhood. Use craigslist to search the terms I gave you. Also, you will need to drive around and call for rent signs. The best places are never listed online, and the national "apartmentfinder" sites only list generic, suburban sprawl type locales, so avoid these sites.

General roads to stay near for being hip and also transportation friendly are probably 4th st, bardstown rd, frankfort ave, and main and market streets. Bardstown Rd is especially vibrant at almost all hours and has buses that run every 15 minutes. The local restaurant, arts, cocktail and indie bar/music scene is really up and coming and quite prominent in the ville.

The Highlands (Bardstown Road-ish ) and Old Louisville are both good choices, but they each definitely have their own vibe. Apartments in the Highlands are more expensive, but there are a lot of room mate situations You might want to consider sharing a place until you have had some time to get to know what your choices really are. If "school" is U of L, you are more likely to want to be in Old Louisville. Craigslist .
