Hi all--
My husband & I are moving to Louisville. He is there now & needs to find an apt ASAP. I've found many listed on Craigslist, but we know nothing about the area. The goal is to find an INEXPENSIVE apt in a safe location (i.e. don't want to have to worry about missing tires in the morning, etc.). He will be working near Dixie Hwy & Broadway, so a convenient commute to work would be nice, but inexpensive & safe are the main priorities. Also, he'd like to be in a quieter area--nothing where people will be up partying all night. So add boring to the priority list.

Please, any suggestions for areas to look in/avoid?
Thanks in advance!
~PK

Need more info. Your ages? Where are you moving from? Where have you lived? Any kids? What is your price range, desired amenities, and number of rooms/bathrooms?

Also, would you consider yourselves, "southern", "midwestern", "international", "coastal" or none of the above? People really underestimate how their choice of neighborhood location AND style of living can really affect how much they like (or hate) a city.

As for your first 2 criteria, 80% of Louisville is safe outside of West Louisville, which is where your husband will work. That said, West Louisville is NOT TERRIBLE like the crime you would see in Chicago, Miami, or LA. Also, almost all of Louisville is inexpensive. The expensive areas stand out since they are an anomaly.

Thank you both. Well, I should clarify--This is a temporary apt situation we are looking for. We need to keep expenses as low as possible, b/c I will still be back home w/a mortgage here for about another 6 months. He'll look for a home, but right now, he just needs an inexpensive, small place--studio or 1 BR apt. Is it possible to find a place for under $500/month? Doesn't need to be fancy--just clean & in a safe neighborhood.

Renovated Small 1 bd-W/D Hookup-near all -UoL,JCC, Spalding - $525 / 1br - (Old Louisville - 2nd St near UoL) pic
this looks really nice and would be close to his work. old louisville just might be a good place for him to look. cool, old buildings converted into apartments, reasonably cheap, and while it can be a little scetchy at times, i would by no means call the area unsafe.

I agree with the area suggestion, that being Southern Pkwy. However I'd avoid Broadway Management if I could.

The best apartment deals in Louisville I found were in the Cresent Hill, Clifton areas. You can navigate to the downtown area very easily as well. Im not sure where Dixie Highway intersects with Broadway but im assuming it is in the west end somewhere, and if you are white you dont live there. Look on craigslist for 1br apts in cresent hill or clifton and you can find something for around 500-600 which is a great deal, and the landlords are very flexible. Best deals in Louisville imo.

Yeah, it goes to broadway dead ending directly in the middle of the block between 18 and 19 across from it.
