I know this is more of a relocation site, but I've been to tripadvisor and not found much there for Louisville. And information I've read about Louisville here is the reason we are considering coming, so I would love to get your advice.

My husband and I are looking at Louisville for a weekend get away for this coming up weekend. We are interested in a Moderate to upscale hotel/inn/etc. We would love to be close to a good part of town to explore. We would also like to be close to somewhere we could run in the mornings.

So, thoughts on hotels, restuarants, things we must do, and a good place to run? We will have a car.

Thanks!

I would definitely stay at 21C Hotel/Museum downtown. Best in the city--see reviews on Trip Advisor. Plenty of jogging areas downtown. Hotel concierge can assist in best routes. I suggest you try the City Taste Tour on Saturday and possibly zip-lining in Mega Caverns. Proof on Main, is a cool restaurant in the hotel or you may want to go to Bardstown Road for some of the best dining anywhere. I would recommend Lillys or Jack Frys. And if you like casino action you can cross the bridge to the Golden Horseshoe. A great weekend it will be!!!! Enjoy!!

I'm also going to second the 21C Hotel. Downtown has plenty to see in a weekend itself if you want and there is the museum as well as Proof on Main restaurant right in the hotel as mentioned. I think this weekend is calling for mid 30's with snow, so I'm not sure how pleasant it's going to be to just walk around and explore or jog, but if you do chose to go out for a run Waterfront Park is great and you could run across the Ohio River on the 2nd street bridge into Indiana if you wanted. The Falls of the Ohio State Park over there is worth popping into for a few hours and on nicer days you can walk along exposed fossil beds by the river. You might also drive 10 minutes down 4th street to the Old Louisville neighborhood, park around Central Park and jog through St James Court or up and down 2nd, 3rd, and 4th streets between Oak and Hill Streets to look at all the beautiful old Victorian architecture.

A lot of people will say to go to Bardstown Rd, which is where a lot of the local 'hip' shops and bars are. I would tell you though, that the road gets very congested and it won't be easy to look around while trying to navigate it. It's also a long stretch to walk. I saw the Mega Cavern mentioned and I would actually not recommend that. It's really more of an underground quarry than a cave and there are much better caves within an 45-50 minutes of downtown if you're into that.

As far as restaurants, my wife and I really like Varenese. If you're into beer at all, I really recommend going to the Bank Street Brewhouse 10-15 minutes west of downtown in New Albany, IN (New Albanian Brewing Company). Best brewery in the area in my opinion. Habana Blues, also in New Albany, is another neat local place (Home Page :: Habana Blues Tapas Restaurant) as is The Silver Dollar (The Silver Dollar - Louisville, Kentucky) in Louisville. Really, just so many good options in Louisville are for places to eat.

If you're into museums, there are several options right downtown. Check out your options here Museum Row on Main. Might give you some nice indoor options for a chilly weekend. You can take ghost tours of Old Louisville(Louisville Historic Tours - Visitors) or the Waverly Hills Sanitorium (Waverly Hills | One of the Scariest Places on Earth!) if you're looking for something different or spooky. The Casino in Indiana is okay, but extremely smoky if that bothers you.

You'll have to come back in the summer time and enjoy some of the outdoor festivals and other options!

Louisville is a very vibrant city but with such junky weather, there will not be too many people out. You picked sort of a crummy time weather wise, but that is ok.

I agree with the above especially the 21C and wanted to add some.

First, the First Friday Gallery hop is a MUST. It is this Friday, Feb 1:

First Friday Trolley Hop | Louisville Downtown Management District
Eat at one of the local restaurants in Nulu that night. I like Wiltshire on Market, Rye, or Blind Pig in nearby Butchertown.

In Old Louisville, 610 Magnolia is a 5 star caliber treat for Saturday. Chef Edward Lee is world renowned.

There is simply too many great dining recs in Louisville, which is easily a Top 20 foodie city, but here are some of the current "hot spots"

The Eater Louisville Heatmap: Where to Eat Right Now - Hot Hot Heat! - Eater Louisville

I agree with the Museums and you have to check out Waterfront Park...too bad the pedestrian bridge is not open yet, it will be at the end of the year. If you like hills and urban parks, Cherokee Park is probably among the best parks in middle America outside the historic parks in places like St Louis/Chicago etc. You will not, for example, find a park the caliber of Cherokee Park (in the Highlands) in Nashville, nor will you find streets like Cherokee Rd and Everett and Willow Avenue.

SHould you like cycling, the World Cyclocross event is this weekend just up river rd from Waterfront Park near Eva Bandman Park. http://www.louisville2013.com/site/index.php. The new restaurant Relish may be a decent spot to grab a quick lunch while you run or cycle over there.

If you guys like bourbon or drinking, you could do the Urban Bourbon Trail: it is a fairly unique thing to the city:

If you like it, come back next year and there will be 3 new urban bourbon distilleries open in downtown. If you stay at 21C, you will find them under construction nearby.

If you are into the arts, actors theatre of Louisville and the various performing arts venues downtown are great.

Here is a list of some events this weekend:

Event Results : GoToLouisville.com Official Travel Source

If you like Daughtery at all, they play at the Louisville Palace theatre this weekend which IMO is one of the best historic theatre venues outside the Coastal NE or Chicago.

I can also vouch for checking out the Slugger Museum and Ali museum as they are relatively small but enough to keep you busy for a few hours and very unique to this region. The Science Center is underwhelming for a major metro area, but its current Body Worlds exhibit is cool if you are into anatomy.

Enjoy and please feel free to write with any further questions....if you are more specific as to interests we may be able to help more.

I also agree that checking out Frankfort Ave or Bardstown/Baxter may be worth a 10 dollar cab, even if only to eat and get a Tshirt at www.whylouisville.com

Cheers.

Thanks for all the help! Looks like 21C is completely booked for the weekend, so with that and the possibility of snow, I think we are going to wait on Louisville. Unfortunately, we can't change our trip times- we have 3 kids in year round sports, so this was the only weekend we had with so few commitments that we felt comfortable asking someone else to keep them.
But after looking up all your suggestions, I'm more exciting than ever about visiting Louisville and will look for a free weekend with better weather.
The City Taste tour looks really interesting. My girlfriends and I do a couple weekend trips a year, and the tour looks perfect for them.

The fall is a great time to visit...good weather, normal humidity, beautiful floors.
