We moved to Louisville just over a month ago. My husband works at UofL, we live in the JeffCo side of Prospect near Norton Commons, we have two school-aged kids and we opted for homeschooling (too many red flags in JCPS for us to feel comfortable and private schools are too expensive for us right now). Our impression so far: We love it! With the exception of a moron on a motorcycle the other day, we have yet to meet anyone who is not at least cordial; mostly people have been friendly and very welcoming. The city is beautiful and has areas that will appeal to everyone. So far our longest trip anywhere in the city has been to the airport, and that took us 30 minutes—including traffic because of an accident. The commute to UofL from our house is about 25 minutes garage to lot, although we'll see how construction that is just starting near downtown will affect that timing. If you love food, there are tons of options. If you love getting outside, tons of options. If you love museums, tons of options. Family activities? Tons and tons of options for all ages and a lot of them are low cost or free. I also love that there is easy access to other places for day trips or weekend trips: Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, Mammoth Cave National Park, Abraham Lincoln birthplace, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and many other places that we have yet to discover or plan future trips to. I think Louisville is a great choice for a family, and whether you like urban, suburban, or rural living, it seems like you should be able to find something here that will fit your preferences. Hope you enjoy it!
