Moving to Louisville? (Lexington, Buechel, Cumberland: renting, crime, hotel)

I have a new job opportunity in Louisville, and my wife and I are weighing the options. We currently live in St. Louis, MO, and we love it here. Lots of free, family-oriented activities for us and our two-year old.

We're doing lots of internet research about Louisville, but I thought I'd pop on this website and see if anyone had any positive experiences in Louisville to share.

I know it's a vague, open-ended question...but if you like living in Louisville and think it's a good place to raise a family, I'd be very appreciative if you could "sell" me on the city. What are the things that you love about your city?

Yes, very vague, but with the exception of an major professional sports, Louisville is very comparable to St. Louis.

I agree. The city proper of Louisville is also more compact, less sprawl, and more family friendly. That said, STL has twice as many suburbs, making it twice the size in metro area, and thus, pro sports.

That said, Louisville offers everything that does STL, with way less hassle, traffic, and crime.

It is really an up and coming city in many ways. If it were me, I would take the job. What questions did you have? What specifically are you looking for?

I feel like Louisville is one of the best places to raise a family.. I see that you have a two year old and i can tell you that Louisville has several privates schools that are outstanding in athletics as well as academics. There are also several public schools that are a good choice as well. Louisville is a growing city with alot of growth and potential.

We have great parks for family fun as well as a great zoo to enjoy the day with your family. The state fair is held in louisville every year and I believe it is the second largest state fair in the United States. Fourth street live is another great place of enterainment. The kentucky Derby is an major event that happens every year in louisville as a matter of fact we are getting ready for that to happen the first weekend in May. Thunder over louisville is the largest firework show in the United States that happens in louisville yearly. There are alot of Family fun that the city of Louisville offers. Univeristy of Louisville just won the NCAA National Championship.

When you finalize your decision and if it is to make the move to louisville I am sure you will be pleasex. I would research areas located in the east and south end and stir away areas located in the west end due to the crime rate. Your question was a little vague maybe with more detail i would be able to help you a little better. My family and I love the city of Louisville.

We r in the exact same scenario. My husband has a job offer to move to louisville and living in dc all our lives we dont know much about it. I just found this forum and am hoping it will help me learn more. We have a 12 year old son and its very important to us that he be raised in a good atea. Weve been told by many that this is a great place to raise a fam. Maybe we can email one another and talk about potential moves! I know we will know more tomorrow and a final decision has to be made by the end of April!

I live in Lexington, but use to live in Louisville. It's a great city to raise a family and I think you will both love it. There are lots of things to do! And many free things to do(at least when I lived there, there was....Louisville has a fantastic park system that just can't be beat, lots of places to hike, fish, have a picnic and just explore - and lots of free things to do at the parks! When I was there I use to like to go to Iroquois park and see the free films they showed outdoors at night, and I loved the Shakespeare in Central park plays also! The Jefferson Memorial Forest, Bernheim Forest and Cherokee Park are all must see for Nature lovers and Hikers! For a bit of Urban fun check out Louisville's Waterfront Park!

Catch a play at Kentucky Center for the Arts, Actors Theater or Derby Dinner Playhouse. Lots of great concerts pop up in Louisville!
The Louisville Zoo is a great place to get in some walking and show your children the different animals.
Want to step back in time just a bit -
You can take a short trip on a
Historic River Boat - the one and the only beautiful Belle of Louisville! Enjoy the Grandeur and Elegance of the Louisville Palace, Seelbach Hotel, or Brown Hotel.
Have a Meal out at one of the Fabulous Restaurants.

Louisville is very centrally located and you can take a weekend trip and visit Memphis, the Smokies, Cincy, Chicago, Nashville - the list goes on! If you like Natural Scenery the things you can see in Kentucky alone will amaze you, on very short day trips - You just have to check out Cumberland Falls, The Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, The Daniel Boone Forest, Land between the Lakes, Mammoth Cave
or just catch the sun rising over the Appalachian Mountains - pure heaven!
Come check out where Abraham Lincoln was born - and just a bit aways you can check out where Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States was born -it's amazing that they were born so close to each other in proximity! Or take a trip to the famous Bluegrass region - you can drive for miles, and miles seeing beautiful horses grazing and running on the beautiful horse farms here.

My boyfriend and I are relocating from Saint Louis (South City) to Louisville for my job. Small world! I'd love to hear the responses you get and maybe PM me if you want to have further discussions about relocating (i.e. moving companies, housing information, etc.). It would be great to know another couple from Saint Louis in Louisville. I also love Saint Louis! Hoping to find the same variety of culture in Louisville!

I start work on 4/29 and will be traveling and telecommuting, hoping to be fully relocated by 6/1.

I see you've offered some great places to see and lots to do! I know there are specific threads on "where to live" but you seem to have a great perspective. Would you mind giving your feedback on the following residential areas (we do not have to worry about school districts):
~Buechel Park/Okolana
~In proximity of Pleasure Ridge High School
~In proximity of Louisville Zoo
~Housing backing on to Iroquois Golf Course or Iroquois Park
~Old Louisville
~Wildwood
~Clifton/Crescent Hill (was really focused on this area but housing options are limited)

I appreciated ANY insight!!! It has been a whirlwind leading up to relocating and not knowing neighbors is limiting. Thank-you in advance for time! ~Vanessa

Wow -- thanks for the replies, everyone!

Yes, I'm sorry that my question was so vague. The main thing we're interested in at this point is best places to live with a two-year old. Safe, quiet neighborhoods, good school district (or at least good options for affordable private schooling). I'll be working at U of L, and, ideally, would prefer a 30-minute commute or shorter. We'd probably be thinking about renting either a townhouse or a house...buying eventually, though probably not right away.

It's just difficult to know what areas/neighborhoods are good and bad based on descriptions on realtor websites.
