My husband has been transfered to Louisville from N. California and we are in the process of getting a feel for homes in the area, online. Can anyone please tell us where in Louisville or outlying towns are a good place to buy a home? We want to avoid any "not so good" areas. We need a home and not a condo and something that is in the 150-200,000 dollar range. Any help would be very appreciated!
Thanks!
Leesa C.

Leesa, you will find several distict communities in the Louisville area. Louisville is located in Jefferson County, KY and it has a semi-merged city-county government with a single school system. Historically, homes located along the Ohio River which serves as the border between Indiana and Kentucky along Jefferson County's north and western sides. The city of Louisville itself if centrally located and developed in a fan shape to the south west, then center, to the north east, then east and now southeastern areas. Jefferson County is typically a bit more cosmopolitian with many ethnic mixes of Western European, Africian, Russian, Viet Namese, and several other small ethnic clusters. Homes in Jefferson/Louisville range across the entire range from multimillion dollar estates, to shantys on the river. A typical 2,000 sq ft 3 bed 2 bath will run from $ 150-300,000. Oldham, Shelby, & Spencer Counties are to theeast of Louisville and is a residential area for typically higher income people working in Jefferson County. A typical home sells for 175-350,000 with many areas having exclusive/high value. Bullitt County lies south of Jefferson and typically has more grey collar than Oldham, etc. Indiana has two primary counties serving as bedrooms for Louisville. Floyd and Clark offer nice homes, good schools, etc, but are often treated a bit like the step-counties as they are too far from Indianapolis to get good political pork, and as most media is geared towards Kentucky politics and attitudes. Overall, you won't go wrong with most any area, but I would look at your school and employment situations as being my main criteria of locations.
