Hi all,
I'm an Austin, Texas native working in health care and a hubby who is in IT. We have been in Berkeley, CA (near San Francisco) for the past 15 years (my husband is a CA native). We are so tired of the fast pace and huge expense here and also the lack of social support for families with kids. We've neen looking at both Louisville and Nashville as possible new homes and now a dear friend from here is moving back to Louisville. If any one has thoughts about the economy, schools, neighborhoods and if city folk like us would fit in, I would love to hear from you. As a Southerner myself, I'd love to get closer to my roots and being in a nice city and hopefully lower the stress factor. Are there many working moms there? Thanks to any advice you can offer.

Well, the fit in question first. Do you have flying saucers landing in your yard? Is there a strange odor coming from your basement? Typically people who ask that question are either gay or bi-racial. In Kentucky, while there are pockets of extremeness, unless your behavior and fears overwhelm no matter what your differences are, you will fit in in KY.

Economy for IT people here is good. Health Care is nationally recognized and growing so there are jobs.

You'll do just fine and yes, there are many many working moms here. Come on over!

It was not my intent whatsoever to put-down gays or bi-racial couples, but rather to put down the myth that Kentuckians are un-welcoming to those lifestyles.

Default Appreciate the economic info but...

Your response was pretty extreme itself. I'm neither gay nor bi-racial, nor did I have any belief at all about what KYians do or don't think about that one issue (that is not all that CA or Austin is about either, btw). I was merely referring to pace, family life and cultural differences and asking about jobs in comparison to where I am now.

lauritap when people tend to ask questions on here about fitting it it is usually about racial or sexial orientation. I don't think tom meant anything by it. Anywhoo, you will be just fine here. Maybe come visit and check it out!

Louisville has several Bohemian sections you might love after living in Austin and Berkley. I agree that we are very progressive about the other issues.

Nashville might be more reminiscent of Austin because of the music scene, and they are certainly more southern than us. But we might be a good compromise for your California husband. Nashville might be too much of a culture shock for him!

Most transplants who move here move to the east end of town. The SW part of the county is nice too and is more Southern in my opinion. It also has some nice newer neighborhoods as well. There are also tons of working moms. Good luck!

I have lived all over, and Louisville is no conservative Bible Belt town...it is no Berkely either. Louisville has some very liberal neighborhoods where you would feel right at home. I would check out the Highlands and Crescent Hill. You will enjoy these zips: 40204, 40205, 40206, and 40207. Good luck and PM me for more details.
