Thinking of moving to Louisville area. Wife and I are looking for a modest rural property with some acreage and about a half-hour commute to the city or upscale suburbs. Low crime. Decent health stats - air and water.

Any suggestions which areas to look at?

The 1/2 hour commute is truly dependent on where your job is in Louisville.

Generally, outlying areas in a 180 radius around Louisville(excludes Ind) - don't know where we'll end up working but looking for nicer small towns around the city.

I'm curious, why do you have to exclude Indiana?

Full service towns include: LaGrange (H), Shelbyville (H), Simpsonville, Taylorsville, Mt. Washington, Shepherdsville (H), & Elizabethtown (H) (H=Hospital)

All of Oldham County is now a small town, at least in attitude.

Taylorsville is pretty cool. It's not too far from the east end of town. It's a rural lake town. There's also Mt.Washington which is pretty nice.

I really love Shelbyville. For commuting purposes, you're basically in Louisville, but the minute you turn off the exit ramp into the town, you feel as though you're 100 miles away. To me, that's the best of both worlds. They have a great little park, good for canoeing or just sitting by the water and watching the geese swim around. The whole town has a really good feel to it.

I live in Crestwood, part of Oldham county, and have worked in the heart of downtown at Kosair Children's Hospital. My commute took me about 30 minutes, but it all depends on the time of your commute. Oldham County boasts very good schools and has homes to fit most budgets, everything from low-end apartment rentals to beautiful million dollar horse farms. It is located northeast of Louisville with Rte 42 to the north, Rte 64 to the south, and Rte 71 running straight through the heart. This gives you easy access to Louisville, Lexington, and Cincinnati. If you want the country life, Rte 42 in northern Oldham county or eastern Lagrange may be the best areas to look. If schools are not an issue, then expanding into the next two counties Trimble (north) and Henry(south) will provide true rural living, plenty of acreage, and a down home feel. Lake Jericho is available for camping and fishing and there is plenty of open land used for hunting.

Not sure why I couldn't rep you on this, but it is one of the most concise, honest, and accurate summaries possible about Oldham County.
