Portland Christian - Westport rd campus is a good school I've heard but don't know anyone who has had children there. There are other private schools that I know kids who attended and they are very good. I've heard that the tuition at is over $6k at Portland bc a large amount of their students are on financial assistance and waiver programs. Christian Academy @ English Station is less expensive and my niece and nephew both go there! It is very impressive to walk in and see how well behaved and order the kids and halls are. Im catholic and pretty liberal so it's not for me but their grad rate for high school kids who grad college w Bachelors is almost 100% and masters degrees are high as well.

Default Louisville School info and National Ratings Site

I should have given you this info earlier.
This site will be your best friend till your kids go to college!!
The Great schools national ratings and information system is Amazing ! Their ratings are very accurate and have public , private, charter and online schools in their data base. You can read parents comments as well but you prob won't get much info on the area of town that the schools services. My sister, step mom and 2 of my aunts work for JCPS (Jefferson Co Public Schools) so I can find out if the school has issues of concern on any level!

Here is the Christian school website

Christian Academy | English Station | Christian Academy School System

And you can find more details on all of Our Catholic schools at

Archdiocese of Louisville

How is the area down where the Synder meets Dixie Hwy in SW Louisville? There is a Sun Valley Golf Course and the river is close by? I think this is the Valley Station area? There are some reasonably prices homes down in this area.
Some of the houses look like they have barred front screen or front doors. This surprised me, kinda like here in Argentina, only here the bars are on everything, windows, doors 1st even 2nd floors.

The area is a lowe middle class suburban area. Not my favorite area, but not a bad area by any means. It is very "southern" there and very far from any good restaurants and shopping.

What about this general area of Okolona? I've heard good and also bad things about the Okalona neighborhood. In one of the other threads a gentlemen siad it used to be a decent, peaceful area but since 2,000 it's begun to decline and now has alot of crime etc....Is this true?

I tend to view things south of Outer Loop as ok to great and things from Outer Loop to I-264 as not terrible but nevertheless avoidable. I was in the Preston Hwy / I-265 last Saturday and it still seems like a really nice area.

I don't know about Okolona or any other area "massively declining" after year XXXX. Overall crime is going down. I've been around Louisville since about that time and the same areas are bad, good, and in between. I'd actually describe some urban neighborhoods like Old Louisville, Butchertown, etc as rapidly improving... at least in terms of amenities even if crime is similar.

The reason everything thinks there are suddenly more shootings is because people under 30 don't watch the news, then they start watching and get afraid. I try not to laugh to hard when I hear the "they never had shootings like that when I was a kid" talk. The old city limits of Louisville had as many murders in 1950 (that's Andy Griffith show time) as did all of Jefferson Co last year.

By outter loop you men the Snyder right? So between the Watterson and the Snyder those areas are "avoidable?" If so, thats a pretty large swath of greater Louisville. What area do you consider really good, good, not so good and totally avoidable when it comes to Louisville?
For us its not so much violent crime as it is burglaries and people stealing things from your property.

No, there is actually a road called Outer Loop - KY 1065. it runs parallel to the Snyder to the North from Auburndale almost to Fern Creek.

If you want to run down of areas I personally avoid in Louisville it would go like this..

BAD BAD - West End / near South End. You could get shot no joke
There are blocks on the W End that have multiple murders every year. Recently an old woman was shot waiting at a bus stop with her grandchild in a stroller! Jeff Co averages 50 to 80 murders a year. 80% occur in the area outlined in black

Pretty bad - Inner ring areas around Downtown (except north of Market) (N Old Lou, Smoketown)

There were several huge public housing units east and south of downtown that have been torn down, but the areas are still recovering. Near downtown is improving. The maroon area west of the airport will probably keep getting worse

Dicey areas with a lot of breakins, occasional murder or robbery. Shively, N of Okolona, Newburg, Beuchel

A picture is worth a thousand words. Here is a rendering of areas based on crime
Color code: Black is very bad, maroon is bad, gray areas are so so.

Your map includes way too many gray areas, especially around downtown and Old Louisville. Also, not ALL of the black area is that bad. There are very few areas in Louisville I would classify as dangerous by big city standards. Almost ALL of these bad areas are north of Algonquin Pkwy, East of I264 (Shawnee Expressway). West of 10th st, and south of market st. Notice this does not include much of the west end areas near the river. These areas, including Portland, are seeing a slow but sure revival.
