I'm worried that this will be like the library tax. All the opponents say they aren't against a better library system and will work for that if the tax is defeated. The tax is defeated and that's just about the last we've heard about an improved library system. (Yeah, it's early, but I'm a cynic!)

With the bridges, I fear the real purpose of opponents is to sink the project altogether. And all this division may do just that. My concern is that if we don't all pull together now, the whole thing is going down the tubes.

Hope I'm wrong and I'm ready to be proved wrong, but this quote doesn't make me feel any better:

"While Norquist was giving his briefing in Louisville, opponents of the bridges project were in Frankfort appealing to state lawmakers to freeze Kentucky's share of funding."

Riverfields is who is against ANY bridges, they and 8664 have nothing in common

8664 wants a better, more vibrant downtown w/o 22 lanes of new concrete

Riverfields objective is to protect rich snobs who live near the East End bridge site

They may have nothing in common, but the more factions there are against the current plan, the more likely that nothing will get done. (Heck, we had nothing in common with the Russians during WW II, but the Nazis will tell you that didn't make much difference!) I actually like the 8664 idea, but at some point you have to put your differences aside and move forward. I thought we did that last year.

With the growing opposition to the two-bridge plan, in common or not, it just seems like we are in danger of losing the entire project. Guys like Williams are just chomping at the bit to kill this project and it seems like we are giving them ammunition.

If I truly thought that dropping the two-bridge plan would lead to the 8664 plan, I'd feel better. The 8664 plan has some big advantages. But I think if the two-bridge plan gets dropped, it will be decades before any plan is picked up again.

I certainly could be wrong and I hope I am.

8664 is FOR a 1 bridge plan, since resigning I-64 around the current I-265 wouldn't be possible w/o a new East End Bridge. The current freeway used by I-64 would continue to downtown, just not go THROUGH IT. This is how nearly all cities outside the US are designed.
