Having moved to Louisvile from Minnesota we were in for quite a suprise when looking at JCPS. There are lots of good options, but the complicated process, multiple applications and the not helpful staff at the placement center we gave up. We are on the East End and were happy to find a nice Catholic school that was affordable. We were not interested in parochial education, but the simplicity of the process was fantastic. If you join the parish and donate some time you can get a much cheaper tutition rate and that is helpful. They also have very good tutition assistance programs. Our son will be attending Ballard this fall and we are tentatively hopeful that all will go well and he will be successful at Ballard. Good luck and I would encourage you to call JCPS directly for their help and to visit lots of schools if possible.

I would echo what others have said about being willing to look into JCPS schools and investing in the process. I would also encourage you to apply to Kentucky Country Day, Collegiate or Walden. These schools offer a great deal of financial aid so that you may end up paying $5,000 instead of the $15,000 to $20,000 list price.

No as a whole they aren't particularly good, but most of the East End high schools have advanced classes that pretty much keep those kids segregated from the gen pop and have many kids that go on to great colleges do great things and teachers who enjoy that brief respite from having to teach everyone else, which, having been on both sides, teaching and being a student, is largely pretty horrible. And of course Manual if they can get in is one of the country's best schools, but even there where there are inevitably lackluster teachers students from wealthy backgrounds with engaged parents are going to do well no matter where they go. If you are in the advanced program at any of the decent schools it's a matter of what you bring to it and put into it moreso than what the school offers.
