Okay guys,

I was watching Extreme Home Makeover last night with Ty Pennington (I know...I know) and they featured the Hughes family from Louisville and their son Patrick Henry, who was born blind and who is a member of the UofL marching band. Aside from building the Hughes a new home, the program also constructed a new practice field for the marching band. I was wondering if anyone else saw this episode and if anyone was there during the filming? Is the UofL budget so tight that they couldn't provide an adequate field for marching practice? (the old field was described as "a swamp") or was this more tv sensationalism than anything?

BTW, the show really pumped me up for my visit in May.

A very nice episode. It was a very big deal with lots of people contributing. This is a very nice family and they deserve this.

As to UL, it has been my experience that they are very, very supportive extracurricular activities in general and of this student in particular. They have bent over backwards for this family from day one. My personal opinion is that part was exaggerated by the TV program.

Part of the problem is funding priorities, as usual. Especially with a tight budget, if you have a choice between academic programs and the marching band, the marching band does - and should - come in second place. But again, the big complaint I've seen is that UL funds athletics and extracurricular activities too much, rather than not enough.

When the construction was going on, some members of the TV crew stayed at the "Staybridge Suites" on Blankenbaker and parked their motorcoach (the same one that pulls away to reveal the new house to the family) behind the hotel every night. We met several of the crew at breakfast and happy hour because we were staying at the same place while we searched for a house. Never met Ty (he must have been staying elsewhere) but the production crew was pretty nice and enjoyed talking about the project.

I work at U of L. The university's budget is being slashed by 15 percent. And then Kentuckians wonder why we're always 49th in median income every year ...
