I'll be moving to Louisville from Cincinnati for School in June. I'll be going to Sullivan University on Bardstown Rd. I'm 22 and want to live in an urbanesque neighborhood with bars and coffee shops within walking distance (such as Clifton, Northside, or Covington in Cincinnati) . I'm also really into music (indie rock esp.) and plan on going to shows.

From doing my own research, it looks like the Highlands or Old Louisville are what I am looking for. I also wouldnt mind living downtown if it isn't to far from campus. These neighborhoods seem very large, what parts of these neighborhoods should I look at. I'm also on a budget.

The Highlands offers the best music and restaurant scene in Louisville. The most urban areas would be north of Douglass Ave extending to north of Broadway (about a 3 mile stretch of road)

Affordability will depend on the landlord. I used to rent a studio apartment off Breckinridge Street in the Original Highlands for $360 including all utilities.

The highlands is definitely the place for you! You can feasibly walk to a bar, coffee shop, shops, bookstores, and see a show almost any night of the week in that area. The highlands can be a little pricey, but if you look diligently you can find what your looking for. I have several friends who do and have rented one bedroom apartments for less than $450/month, and I am planning on doing the same within the next year.

Dont use apartmentfinder, its full of suburban crap.

Start with craigslist.org and pay special attention to listings marked Bardstown Road or Highlands. Also look at Old Louisville, Clifton, and Crescent Hill.

louisville apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

New listings post daily and some days are better than others.

Unfortunately most of the best rentals are found by coming here and finding a street you like, then finding for rent signs. You are much better off renting a house/small apartment from a local owner than renting in a mega suburban complex listed on apartmentfinder...I wish I could put apartmentfinder out of business like I wish I could put Applebee's out of business...neither are representative of the culture and vibe of Louisville.

If you want ideas for downtown living, there are apartments, specifically high rise buildings, that are acceptable. Let me know...

STX12499 I'm moving to Louisville soon- I posted something asking for info but not a lot of responses so far. I'll take you up on your offer for suggestions in or around downtown- something safe for a single woman. Also any neighborhoods that are particularly funky, creative or unique. Thanks,

The best complexes downtown are Kentucky Towers, Barrington Place, Saint Francis, and Henry Clay. There are many many others, though, as well as condos for rent sometimes.

Kentucky Towers is the most affordable and has a secure, attached garage for 40/month. Rents are very affordable with all utilities included.

downtown, from the river south on 4th street to uofl Campus, and bardstown/baxter avenue from downtown to I-264 are the funky and creative areas. I absolutely adorn Cherokee Road and Willow Avenue, for thier turn of the century Victorian ambiance and 24/7 vibe.

Along Frankfort ave from River road to Shelbyville road you also have a wonderful urban area.

On craigslist.org, Highlands, downtown, Germantown, Butchertown, Crescent Hill, Clifton, and Old Louisville are all buzzwords for neighborhoods that are funky, urban, eclectic, and just downright cool.
