Hi everyone, I'm new to these boards and need some advice. My husband is planning on going to medical school in the next couple of years, and we are trying to figure out whether UofL may be a good choice. I lived in Louisville about ten years ago and loved the city, though I was young, lived in Oldham County, and don't really have any contacts there anymore. However, Louisville stuck with me as a city I really enjoyed, though it's hard to figure out if it would be a good fit for us now. At this time in our lives, we would love to live in the city, not out in the suburbs like OC again. We're both young (early 20s) with no children and would like to meet close friends as a couple as well as find an active Christian church with a large group of people our age. Also, I worry about being somewhat of an outsider since I haven't lived there in so long - do you think Louisville residents are open to people from other states - could we find close friends there?

My husband is of course interested in the med school - in your opinion does UofL have a reputable med school? We live in another part of the country now so we wouldn't hear anything about it. Of course it's not Harvard but overall does it have a good reputation and a good program? One more detail - I'm a teacher. Are the school systems in the city safe? Is there a demand for teachers? Any advice on these matters would be so appreciated, thanks so much!!

U of L's medical is one of the more prestigious public research medical schools in the US.

Notable discoveries/ innovations:
- 2nd hospital to have an ambulance & emergency room (U of Cincy was first)
- first wireless artificial heart transplant
- first success hand transplant in the world
- developed Gardasil, world's first cervical cancer vaccine

Overall U of L is a mid-pack major public university that is make large gains in retention, endowment, and quality of students (ACT score, class rank). It was more of a non traditional commuter school until the about 10 years ago. U of L had the fastest growing NIH funding from 1999 to 2005, not sure what it would rank in growth now.

You'd like the Highlands area (Baxter Ave/ Bardstown Rd), Frankfort Ave, or maybe even East Main/ Market. These areas have lots of young professionals

I would not hesitate to tell you to locate in St. Matthews or Crescent Hill. Great places to live. You will find a wonderful group of Christians at St. Matthews Baptist Church. It's a church full of great people, including many physicians and teachers. The church is a leader in world reconciliation ministries, too.
