Construction work as began on the 2nd largest construction project in U of L history (after PJ Cardinal Stadium). It is converting a 55 acre brownfield just west of the Belknap Campus into housing for 5,000 students. It includes converting the historic building at 7th and Shipp Ave into a parking garage

Project timeline:
800 students housed by Fall 2009
+500 more students housed by Fall 2010
a total of 3,500 to 5,000 students housed by 2015

More big news... U of L has purchased another large brownfield near campus, this one is located from just south of the Speed School extending just across from New Cardinal Stadium/ the Baseball Stadium.

University Foundation plans to purchase land bordering Belknap Campus :: News :: University of Louisville -- dare to be great

The historic building is located at 7th and Shipp Ave. It is in the 3rd photo. It looks really cool from 7th Street (other than being abandoned for 20 years )

I just noticed ANOTHER major project at the end of a CJ article - an 8 story dorm at Floyd Street and Cardinal Blvd

"A Louisville group, Icon-Cards Development LLC, has proposed student housing on 1.6 acres just northwest of Cardinal Boulevard and Floyd Street. It would compose of an eight-story structure with 384 beds and 20,000 square feet of commercial space."

Census, I believe this proposal has been out for awhile, but has not been moving. In fact, I believe we may have a rendering somwehere in the development thread from last year.
