Thank you! I noticed under your name 'young black and conservative'--- I am the Italian Mom of 2 beautiful mixed children-- how is the area for racial type stuff? I am originally from Brooklyn NY, but lived 20 years in the Dallas TX area (which has a big mixed-race population) ...lived In Memphis (nice, but reverse racism sadly rampant)..and most recently small mountain town in northeast TN. Yeah...we get 'looks'
So just wondering how comfortable my kids and I will be in the Hardin County area from your perspective? Hope this doesnt offend in any way..not meaning too

From my perspective, in my couple of months here, I haven't noticed much racial trouble. In Radcliff, there is a Wal-Mart right next to Ft. Knox and I see a lot of mixed kids and couples every time I go in. As a native of a military area (Hampton Roads, VA) the presence of Ft. Knox is the biggest benefit to racial relations here.

I'm I saying there are no racists here? No. You will see rebel flags here but I also saw a few in Northern VA which is supposed to be diversity paradise. But I think the reputation for rampant racism that KY has is overblown for the most part and I would put Louisville and Hardin County as exceptions to that rule.

Mostly everyone I've encountered here is nice as long as I've been nice to them. I think people here will treat you how you treat them for the most part.

You may want to try The News-Enterprise which is Hardin County's newspaper for rental listings.

There are very few areas in the east suburbs which are walkable with a historic feel, but I would check out the areas around the Summit and Westport Village malls.

If you want an older, inner ring suburb, you may like St Matthews, which is walkable and urban at its northern terminus within a mile radius of a nice bar called Brendan's (among other bars on that strip). In this area, Bowling Boulevard has some nice apartments built in the suburban style, especially Waterford Place.

I would look strongly at the Highlands though. People move here and don't look at the city because they think or hear its dangerous, but Louisville is much different than other cities in that you CAN live right near downtown and be very safe. I can assure you that 40204, 40205, and 40206 zip codes are as safe as anything in the suburbs and much more rewarding areas to live with regards to urbanity, educated young professionals, walkabilty, and historic feel with parks.
Thank you for information; )

My husband just got a job on Freys Hill Rd. The zip code is 40241. We will be moving to Ky from Fl in the next month. We are excited for to move somewhere that has more than 2 seasons of hot and REALLY hot! But we have never even visited Ky so we have no idea where to begin looking for places to live. We are looking to rent a house with at least 3 bedrooms and would like to be in a family oriented development. We would love a place for our children to ride bikes and play with their friends outside without worrying about cars driving crazy. We are wanting a place for around 1000.00/mo or less?? (Don't know if that is realistic or not?) My husband would like a commute of 20 minutes. We have two daughters, a 4 1/2 and a 1 yo. The older one is in preschool here and we want her to go some where once we move. We are looking for a 5 day a week program for 3-4 hours a day. Does Ky have free pre-K like Fl has?

I have a million more questions but I will hold off for now. I look forward to hearing about your area!
Thank you in advance for all of your helpful information!
Welcome to Kentucky! I live close to the 40241 zipcode and think you will really love it! 40241 borders on south Oldham County and has a ton of shopping, restaurants, and parks nearby. Finding a rental property for less than $1000/month in the immediate area will be pretty difficult, but not impossible. It really comes down to what neighborhood you'd want to be in. It also depends on how long you're planning on staying in a rental home. If you think you'd be in a rental for more than a year or tow, you'll also want to think about the school district the home is in.

As far as pre-school programs go, I believe most of the free programs in both Oldham/Jefferson are income based. In Oldham (and I think Jefferson County as well), the pre-school program is run by Head Start. That means you're only eligible to enroll your child in the program if you are low income or if your child has a special need, such as speech issues.

Jefferson County also has some tuition based programs. From looking around their site, it appears it is $115 a week plus $2 a day for lunch. There are several nice private pre-schools in the area, but of course there is a cost involved. I hope this helps!

I'm planning to move to Louisville from the Boston area in the next few months (once I get enough money saved up to move!). My roommate and I are single girls in our early to mid-20s, so we'd like to live in an area relatively close to bars, movies, etc where we can meet people our age (we'll be there with only 1 car, so if there are things around in walking distance, that would be great). We'll both be working in St. Matthews (Mall St. Matthews), and would prefer not having to commute more than 20 minutes, but commute time isn't a deal-breaker. I think we could afford up to about $800-900/month for a 2BR (although cheaper would, of course, be okay). We're still pretty up in the air about what we're looking for in a neighborhood, but one thing I know I DON'T want is a suburb where every house looks the same (I lived in an area like that in Vegas and I just hated it). Suggestions? TIA!

Highlands no question. You may also look at the heart of St Matthews and possibly also Old Louisville, Clifton, Crescent Hill, downtown and Germantown. As a reference I'd google Molly Malone's and try to be in walking distance of either location which will put you in walking distance of anything a young professional would want in a city with the exception of pro sports and super upscale shopping.
