Is anyone else going to Idea Festival (http://www.ideafestival.com/dynamic/speakers/ - broken link)and/or Idea Kentucky ? I am looking forward not only to hearing the speakers and panels, but to being among local folks who read and think and take chances... The Idea Kentucky luncheon seems like a great way to brainstorm about the region's future. I'll be there sort of representing Vanguard Cinema, but also feeding off the ideas I hear...

Is there interest out there?

Vanguard had a great turnout for their 'soft opening' (very soft - no walls yet!) last week. Two excellent music acts (Trophy Wives and Scott Kearney), two delightfully weird films (Girls Rock and Machine Girl). The crowd made it clear they are anxious for a truly innovative alternative cinema. We had a booth at Forecastle and there were so many people who, when we explained what Vanguard would be, showed them the floor plans, nearly danced up and down with excitement. It's going to be cool... spring of next year at Mellwood: two screens, full menu, bar, beer... and a restaurant besides the food served in the theatre.

Speaking of film, Idea Festival will have a lot of film-connected speakers, including Stu Pollard (who is interested in the Vanguard project ), Lexington filmmaker Michael Feit Dougan, and several other nationally and internationally known screen writers, producers, directors.

In addition to all the film-connected stuff, I'm looking forward to philosopher Nassim Nicholas Taleb (he'll talk, among other things, about randomness, one of my favorite concepts), Jonah Lehrer (talking about Proust, whose work I love), Puzzle Master Will Shortz, Teller of Penn and Teller (he talks!), Leonard Shlain (The Alphabet and the Goddess), and a couple of architects: Emiliano Gandolfi and Bjarke Ingels.

Quite a full plate!
