Thanks, guys. I'd love to meet for coffee, stx - you're the most respected, knowledgeable poster here - and I would enjoy sharing some ideas. DCE sometime? Anybody else out there?

Speaking of ideas... I have to start an Idea Festival thread again. I went to almost everything and there's so much to say about what it revealed about the town, the people, the hope... We have some World Class in our veins: Small and Smart...

I am the OP. Thanks for all your responses. It certainly is interesting reading everyone's opinions concerning Louisville. On the 17th of October, my wife and I are flying down to look at unfurnished apartments in the city. My wife is moving the first week in December with our small dog.. I will stay in Milwaukee until we sell our house or I get a job. I hope the process doesn't take too long, but my assumption is it will take until summer. Do any of you have suggestions as to where we should look at apartments? My wife is being set up with a real estate agent who is going to show us units Downtown and in the Highlands. What do you guys think? Is the dog going to handicap us? Thanks

Eno--I'm not from L'ville. Just moved here from a city much like Milwaukee, where I also once lived. I lived in London for awhile, traveled extensively, and I like L'ville. But I'm older and have done all that, so I'm not as interested in nightlife anymore, though Lord knows I do love to eat--without spending a small fortune, and I find the restaurants decent.

The people here are genuinely friendly and unpretentious and interesting. If you're interested in friendships, I think you'll find you can put down roots here.

On first glance, I didn't like the architecture that much either, but once here, I've found interesting gems tucked back away. This is a city that requires you make love to it to know every nook and cranny and quirky endearment.

And louroclou, I'd love to have that coffee with you, too. Beautiful way of seeing things.

Sounds good. Explore all over the urban city all inside I-264 east of 9th street, and also some areas outside I-264. You will like Frankfort ave and Bardstown Road corridors the best. Louisville is actual very urban and has wonderful architecture....it is just different than Milwaukee. Keep your mind open and realize Louisville is not a glitzy city--stuff doesn't just jump out at you--as the above poster said, you have to get to know the nooks and crannies because there are a lot more than you realize at first glance. Let me know if I can be of any more help, as I know the urban city extensively well. Also, it sounds like we may do a forum tour soon.

Wink Been Trying to Get Back to Louisville Since 2002

I grew up in Erie, PA, and I loved it there. I moved to Louisville in 1997 where I met my husband. In 2002, he took a new job that has sent us to Indy, Fairfax, VA, and now Orlando.

Simply put, I love Louisville. There's no place quite like it. Most people go out of their way to be friendly, and a previous poster is right about Louisville's "nooks and crannies." There's so much to explore.

There's a sense of community that isn't in Indy, Fairfax, or Orlando. I love the landscape, the parks, the river, the trees, the neighborhoods, and Derby!

I want to move back badly, so if you have the chance to move, take it!
