It is its own city, with its own government and police force. It is technically also governed by metro Louisville, and is in the same county. As such, it is largely a Louisville suburb and many locals who do not know better consider it a Louisville "neighborhood." However, it's population is separate from Louisville's (the census bureau does not recognize all of Jefferson County in the population estimates), and it's busineesses get a Jtown city tax.

I think when the city and county government merged, existing incorporated cities were exempted. J-town was already incorporated, I think.

yeah, that was my point, off topic. The census will not recognize Jtown and other cities as part of Louisville, but they are clearly part of Metro Louisville. As such, Louisville's population is listed at 550k when it should be above 700k.

If my google Earth is correct, J-Town is in eastern Louisville on Taylorsville Road at the intersection of Watterson Trail.

Sorry...to bump this but does anyone have a more clearly defined border(s) for what is considered Jtown?

"J-town" refers to the city of Jeffersonville, KY, roughly located along the southern boundary of I-64 from Hurstbourne Lane to Blankenbaker Pky and Billtown Rd. and south to Vettiner golf course, also including the office buildings and shopping area north of 64 to Shelbyville Rd.(Most maps don't show specific boundaries...this one is the best I could find)

Yahoo! Maps, Driving Directions, and Traffic

IIRC, the police station and city hall of J-town is at Taylorsville Road and Watterson Trail

One other thing that's confusing to transplants: "J-town" is Jeffersontown, KY. When locals say "Jeff" , they're referring to Jeffersonville, IN
