O.K. Now were hopefully getting really close to our final move to the Oldham area! Now my wife needs some good guestimates regarding average cost of gas, electric, & water for a family of 4 in a 2000-2500 sq ft home monthly or yearly. Specifically Goshen or River Bluff area. Any extra city fees that you know of please let me know. With this tight economy my job offers have unfortunately been less financially than I had hoped for, so now were crunching numbers hoping to still make it work! Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Your question is a good question. We all would love to have a very simple answer, but the best estimate would come from LG&E. You can not and will not get an intelligent answer from a member of this forum unless they have two to three years history of quantitative usage such as how many degree-days and several example homes to use as an average. LG&E will have this type of information available.

Question Budget Questions part two

Thanks Tom. I understand what you are saying, but I was hoping that with all the similar families in the Goshen/River Bluff area that a few could give me what they are paying on average. I know it is not an exact science, but since their are so many homes for sale as well as being lived in with similar demographics as us, thought that the locals could be of help. I will check out your LG&E site too for any help. Does LG&E cover all the utilities I am asking about? Over here it is different. Different payee's for all. I already had a realtor give me an aproximate, just wanted to hear from the people! I understand how each year can be different due to increased heat or cold using the Heater or A/C, but just want an average for the average month. If someone wants to give me the $$ difference for Winter to Summer that is o.k. too. Thanks in advance!

I'm in Jefferson County, right on the Oldham County line, so it might be a little different. Average cost for me in a 2,200 square foot home is around $210 in the winter and $190 in the summer. I'm also on propane, so maybe that takes some of the cost off the electric bill.

My husband and I had the SAME question when we moved to Oldham County from New York state a month ago. What we did was ask for the utility bills for the houses we were serious about buying to get an idea of what that particular house costs in utility bills (some homes are more energy efficient then others). However, I must warn you, do NOT accept anything but the actual bills on paper because the sellers and realtors can say whatever they want to make the sale! Also, bear in mind that usage will vary depending on how many people live in the house etc. This is the best way to get a real picture of what you are going to pay out. I would encourage anyone looking at buying a home to do this to prevent any unfortunate surprises down the road.

Ohhh and make sure you get a years worth of utility bills since the prices fluctuate.
