Lurker here...I have been reading posts on here for a while and since I finally have official word that we're relocating to Louisville, I thought I'd throw my situation out there and see if there's any wisdom out there that any of y'all would be willing to bestow upon me. I read the newcomer thread and thought I'd answer the basics there :

-Where you are working [1 sahm & 1 active duty Marine working out of Louisville]
-How much you are willing to spend on housing [our housing allowance is around $900-would like to stay under $1000/month]
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate [well, that's up to the DH but I think he could handle about a 30 min. drive]
-If you have kids: Private school or public school? [2 kiddos not in school but a good preschool might be in order in the next couple years]
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: small town feeling? small city excitement? suburbia delight? [herein lays the problem, I don't know! I think my dream would be quiet family neighborhood but within 10 minutes of emergency store ie; Wal-Mart, Drugstore, etc]
-Community amenities important to you [the typical, quiet, safe...blah blah]
-Pie or cake? um, both!

We won't actually be moving until the May time frame so I know that it's hard to look at rentals before then but I'm hoping to have the neighborhood's narrowed down.

We are planning on heading up that way to check out the city and see what the drive is like from Ft. Knox (even though we won't be stationed there) to Louisville at the end of this month. This would be much easier if we were moving into base housing but since my DH is on an individual assignment we're on our own. I've heard that the drive from the Ft. Knox area to Louisville is too far to commute without it being a huge pain. Mind you, we live 6 minutes from work right now. Anyways, any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It depends on where in Louisville you will be in as to how big of a pain the drive will be. The SW parts of the county will be easiest I think.
