Floyd County Schools...Info please!!! (Louisville, Albany: crime, how much, home)

We have always planned on moving to Oldham county when our oldest hit middle school. We are right on the Oldham/Jeff line (Jeff side) and have tons of friends out these. Our thoughts are that Oldham is getting way crowded and the quality of the schools has suffered and will continue to do so. Also it is expensive for what you get.
Like many who have lived in Louisville I never thought of looking over the bridge as the towns seemed kinda seedy but we love the Floyd's Knob area and cannot believe how much house/land you can get for the money.

So how good are the schools over there? Also we really want to be part of a smaller community that is more concerned with each other rather than what kind of car you drive.

So please give me the downlow on the Floyd County way of life.

Having lived in the Knobs I can tell you stay away. It is a very clannish area. If you arent part of multiple generations who were born there you'll never totally be accepted and kept at arm's length. I know this firsthand. The majority of the people there feel they are entitled to whatever they want. The sense of community there is, "What can I get from everyone else that will benefit me?" No, not everyone there has this mentality, but that's the overall vibe. I couldn't stand it there so I moved away, and a year later my parents followed suit for the same reasons. You will not find any diversity racially. That area has a long history of prejudice.

As far as the schools go, they do have an excellent program. The downside that they don't talk about is how rampant drugs are within the high school. If kids aren't using they have been exposed to it and know exactly where to go to get it. IMHO, you're far better off in Oldham Co.

Hmmm. Good to know! We just cannot decide. I just love how beautiful it is on the other side of the river but it may just be better to stay in the area we know. Thank you for your input.

Well, if you are looking at moving to Floyds Knobs, the schools out there are very good schools. Especially with all the money they have recently put into Highland Hills Middle and all the ongoing renovations at Floyd Central. Floyd Central definitely has some good athletic and performing arts programs..... They used to have a lot of strong faculty and staff; I don't know about now. My son attends an elementary school in New Albany and this will be his second year there. He attended kindergarten at one of the parochial schools here in town, but I have been far more pleased with sending him to a public school. I feel that he has gotten a much higher quality of education.

Actually since I've lived on both sides of the river, I find Oldham County to be more clannish than anything in Floyd County. Sure you have the Knobs and the people living there high on the hog. However, you are better off living in Indiana for several reasons. Far less crime than Louisville. People more laid back and less pretentious and more down home. Granted that the Knobs lacks friendliness but I know a lot of people in that region around Northern Harrison Co, Southern Washington, and West Floyd and those are in most cases laid back and down home people. Plus, you're still close enough to visit Louisville and get the heck out without living there and paying Louisville taxes.

Colonel, in this instance, it's best, though perhaps not as accurate, that you spelled "clannish" with a "c" rather than a capital "k."
