My wife and I moved up here in November and are in an apartment, close to the malls, in Lyndon. We like the area, but living in a apartment with two dogs is annoying and expensive, as you can imagine. So we've been looking at houses ever since we've been up here.

We found a house we like pretty well but were wondering about the area.

It is just off Preston Highway, just one mile north of Gene Snyder. We have lots of friends who live just off Preston and Cooper Chapel south of Gene Snyder, and this seems pretty close.

However, Preston Highway looks a little rundown in places. Is it a good area to settle down in? We want the next house we move into to be our 20 year house, so to speak.

Thanks for the thoughts!

Default recommendation

I'd stay south of I-265. There are numerous selections on both sides of I-265 and taking a chance on a large investment is not worth buying on the north side of I-265. Preston hwy, from Lynnview all the way to Okolona is not getting better as we watch year after year. Cooper chapel is scheduled to expand to four-lane sometime in the future which will add to the already nice neighborhoods near Cooper.

Trust your instincts. It's rundown and getting worse. Several CJ stories on crime, etc. can confirm that.

The Okolona area in general has gone downhill over the years, especially the area along Preston from Outer Loop to around Fern Valley Rd. There's actually been quite a bit of gang activity around there recently, although I will say that most of the riff-raff seems to be confined to the apartment complexes around there - the single-family residential areas seem generally ok (some well-kept homes and some that look quite rundown).
The area of Okolona you're referring to isn't as bad as the north side of Outer Loop but I agree with what the other posters said in that you should stay south of the Gene Snyder.
Johnsonkk mentioned the Cooper Chapel Rd. area, I'd stick with that. Several newer subdivisions around there with homes priced in the mid 100K's if that would work.
However I will say if the home you're referring to is on the east side of Shepherdsville Rd./Manslick Rd. towards the Smyrna area it would be a decent area to settle in terms of the actual neighborhood.
Hope this helps and feel free to ask if you have any more questions.
