The Highalnds is an awesome, urban, walkable area, and the bar strip at the intersection of Baxter and Bardstown is a fun area to live, especially as a single. I lived there in my single days. Sadly, the Highlands has very few true loft like spaces with an industrial warehouse feel or community amenties. There are however some sweet homes, condos, and historic rehabs in taht area, and parts of the Highlands are as close to the medical center as the west side of downtown.
I recommend the Henry Clay or Glassworks. Both are gorgeous. Really try to get into the Henry Clay if you can. Avoid Lofts of Broadway. They are nice, but there is a sketchy area south of them, and the property managers are not the best. From the Henry Clay, you could walk to work in five minutes or bike. Also, with your UofL ID, you ride city buses for free, and there is a bus line there with several busses servicing the medical district, including the medical center circulator, the chestnut street bus, and the muhammad ali bus. There is also good nightlife at Fourth Street nearby, and some staples for food and a small urban grocer plus a nearby CVS for staples. You'd have to leave downtown for a larger, mega grocery.

I'm the only one it seems that doesn't like the Highlands area of Louisville. I don't like the hippie vibe thing.

A lot of the shops and places like Cafe 360 attract a lot of hipster/skater kids, but that doesn't drive me away. It just adds to the uniqueness, and I don't really see anything wrong with the hipster culture. Last time I was at Heine Bro's on Bardstown and Eastern Pkwy, the girl working there was very hipster, but very friendly and we talked for a good 5-10 minutes, without having really anything in common. Theres nothing wrong with venturing out and exposing yourself to other cultures or lifestyles.

The Reynolds Lofts is a newly remodeled warehouse type loft right by U of L. You can rent a loft for $900/mo. Very cool place. They are for sale too. Very high ceilings & open floor plans with a roof-top deck.
