I am a first year resident moving to Louisville and need to be as close as possible to U of L Hospital. Any suggestions on buy vs rent and suggestions on where to look? Neighborhoods etc?

Where you are working: U of L Hospital
-How much you are willing to spend on housing: $850/month or $125k to buy at least 2Bdr/2 bath
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate: 5 to 15 min max
-If you have kids: Private school or public school? None
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: small town feeling? small city excitement? suburbia delight? Anything safe and good resale area if I buy

To buy or not depends on you. There are condos for sale in your price range. The Central Park Lofts and Reynolds Lofts look cool on line but I haven't been inside them. There are also units inside some of the old buildings down there. Some were built as multi-family and some weren't. I'd stay away from the ones that weren't unless the conversion was extensive and good quality.

ok, well have decided to rent til I know the neighborhoods better. Any suggestions on apartments close to the med center or condos? Have checked craig's list and read several posts here, but wondering where others working/living near med center live and would reccommend.

The best area near the Med Campus is off Baxter Avenue about 1 mile east. The greater area is called the Highlands, specific neighborhoods to check out would be the Original Highlands, Cherokee Triangle, and Irish Hill. Lots of young professionals and places to eat/ shop. It's generally a very safe area.

I have a buddy I can email to see if there are certain places residents tend to live. He finished about 4 years ago. How sensitive are you to commute times?

He said 'no place in particular'. I lived in Coppershire Condo's for a while and there were a few residents there which makes them pretty popular given it's a small development. They are just east of downtown by the Watterson & Zorn Ave. They share a small dead end drive with River Oak Apartments which is a nice place to rent. You have easy access to downtown via Mellwood ave., River Rd., the Watterson, & Brownsboro Rd. Take any one of those roads into town and you can be at the hospital within 15 minutes even in pretty heavy traffic; 10 in light traffic.
