what's wrong with SW Jefferson county? (Louisville, Fort Knox: real estate, crime, new house)

It seems like when areas to move to are asked about the SW parts of the county tend to be left out. Why is that?

I don't know, Missy. It is a nice area, although it is a bit lacking in the retail department. Also, besides Fort Knox people, there simply are not a lot of people relocating to that area. Most of the people there are "native south enders" with some sort of long standing family ties to the area. I find that these people are vehemently loyal to the city, and especially to the South End. They are very proud of where they come from.

Now, I think the real estate people push corporate relocations east where the homes are much more expensive. People moving here from the coasts (it seems the secret on Louisville is out) tend to be steered toward the east by realtors, and then they see all the retail and jobs in that area. Often these people moving here think any home in the region is a bargain, but they often fail to realize they may be overpaying (for this region) when they spend 1 million on a 4 bedroom home in eastern Jefferson KY when the exact same new house cost 400k in an area like Windsor Forest or any of the other new upscalish subdivisions going in on Arnoldtown Road (which by the way has a very serene country feel with those beautiful knobs and hills all around and the thick trees).

Let me add that every city has this problem, as far as I know. When I lived in Chicago, everyone always said "stay away from the southside." Everyone always wanted to live on the north side and the north suburbs. While much of the southside of the city is indeed an urban ghetto (with several notable exceptions like South Loop and Hyde Park), there are some wonderful south suburbs past the blight that are very nice. Geographically, the demographic set up is similar to Louisville on a much larger scale.

Alot of the reason the South end gets a bad rap is because the most visible parts of it are around Churchill Downs and U of L - and those areas are terrible!

SW Louisville is less college educated than the rest of the county (12% to 28%), although its average income is almost identical with the county average ($40,000) Right now the only major attractions in that area is either Iroquois Park or Farnsley Morman Landing. They are planning to mass expand the park at Greenwood Road and the Ohio River all the way to the FML within the next few years

If you're referring to my post, I'm assuming most people asking questions on here are worried about crime and traffic, so I recommend the most suburban areas.

I am not referring to any specific post and yes, they are expanding Greenwood (what I call greenwood boatdocks a.k.a Riverview park) right now and they are re-doing the playgrounds at Iroquois. I tend to go to Otter creek quite a bit and yes, I do walk the levee at farnsley-mormon. As far as college educated, I dunno the stats. What I do know is you can get a nice house for quite a bit less that what you can get in the east end and some areas you can get some land as well. I know alot of our area is seen as redneck but it's worth looking into.
