Hey, all you Lubbockites out there. I've got a question. Wasn't there a new convention center that was supposed to be under construction on NW Loop 289 near Quaker? It's supposed to be a large, new events center sandwiched between two hotels, and one of the hotels is already completed. I haven't heard anything new about the project since they talked about breaking ground, and that was more than a year ago. Have you guys heard anything new on that? I've tried to Google-search, but nothing would come up.

You might be able to find some info about it on Lubbock City Council website: Official City Website for Lubbock, Texas.

Default Unbelievable!

I checked out that site, but nowhere there does it give any info even on the progress of the construction. In fact, it doesn't even mention the new convention center at all. You'd think that anytime a convention center is under construction in any city, it would be a big deal and that the newspapers and the TV stations would constantly give updates.

Thanks, anyway, Lilypad. At least, I connected to a site talking about downtown revitalization, and I spent a half-hour looking!

Seems like there was a big brouhaha in the paper about refurbishing the downtown convention center. Was supposed to cost many millions and there was talk of raising taxes. After a few days didn't hear any more about it.

Never heard about a convention center going up at that location. I believe you're referring to the new $65 million Hotel and Convention Center going up on University Blvd across from the Texas Tech campus. They've increased the scope of the project and incorporated a few more floors and they're supposed to break ground on this project soon.

They actually, believe it or not, had plans to do a big hotel with a convention center near downtown and Texas Tech at the makeover of Overton Park. I'm not sure how that's going. It's actually a separate deal from what they're doing on Loop 289. The 289 location is part of a thing called North Park, and it contains a La Quinta (already open) and a proposed Hilton Garden Inn, and both hotels would connect with Lubbock's new convention center via elevated walkways. I think some restaurants and a few shops were supposed to be part of the North Park plan. In addition, I think I did hear about plans to renovate the Civic Center downtown. That would be wild having all three of those things happen.

I have a relative in the Lubbock area, and the last I heard, construction was underway on the site at the loop.
