I'm really interested in going to Texas Tech but there's one catch; i'm from NY. Is it going to be hard for me to be liked among guys? what about being friends with girls? hopefully the Greek system helps me!

The type of guys who would hold your being from NY against you aren't worth knowing in any case.

I'm a freshman in college, and though I'm going to UT, I'm a Lubbock native and know tons of Tech students. Most of the students are from the larger cities in Texas, which are full of transplants, and the native West Texans might see your place of origin/accent as a bit of a novelty. There might be a few people that give you a hard time, but they generally will mean it in good humor. Just don't take yourself or their comments too seriously, and you'll be fine. Also, get used to answering the question: Why did you come here?

Edit: If you can afford to go Greek, you'll shouldn't have any worries. It's a built-in, albeit shallow, social life.

Okay! True, I will have to get used that question. Nerves are a little bit calmer.

I believe that will be the least of those things you'll "have to get used to" - as differences in locale are dramatic. While one school may be just like another once you're sitting in a classroom.

My dad went to Tech from NJ in the '70's and hasn't lived anywhere but TX since.

I know 2 women that attended Tech, both from the Philly area, back in the 70's and loved it. Both are still in Texas.

When I went to Tech back in the 90's one of my best friends that I met there was from Chicago. He loved being at Tech and had no problems while he was there so I think you'll be okay.
