My family and I are moving to Lubbock in about 4wks. My daughter is in 6th grade. We are looking to buy, and came across a potentially good deal, but the middle school zoned for the area is Mackenzie Middle School. Since i'm not familar with how TX grades schools, I checked greatschools for their rating. They rated it a 3 out of 10. Is this an accurate picture? Help!!

From what I've heard, Mackenzie is nothing outstanding, but it's not a bad school either. There are some neighborhoods zoned to it that some might consider a little rough, but I'm not really sure what the ratings on GreatSchools are based on. It's one of the feeder schools for Coronado High, which is the second-best high school in town, so it really should be fine.

That said, if you're that concerned, I would highly recommend looking into Hutchinson Middle School. It has a magnet program, and it tends to draw the most academically talented students in the city, though anyone can transfer there with proper paperwork. O.L. Slaton is similar, though I've heard it has become much rougher in the past few years.
