Here is part of what Wikipedia has to say about Preston Smith,

Quote:
The airport is the 8th busiest airport in Texas. Lubbock International is first among the smaller Texas cities (behind only both Dallas airports, both Houston airports, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso)
Not anymore.

It has gone pretty much unnoticed but Midland International has surpassed Preston Smith in enplanements last year. This as due to both an increase in passengers at MAF and a decrease at LBB.

2012
Lubbock Preston Smith International 475,680
Midland International 497,193

2011
Lubbock Preston Smith INternational 503,580
Midland International 474,423

I'm sure it goes in swings. Next year may see a different result. We'll find out.

It looks like Lubbock numbers have been in decline for some time. Though this source doesn't show they have less then Midland.

Enplaned

2007 584,258
2008 569,584
2009 550,825
2010 525,402
2011 521,678

Midlands seem to bounce around.

Enplaned
2007 491,321
2008 487,403
2009 420,845
2010 442,543
2011 466,353

I am not sure why there is discrepancy in the numbers, but here are the figures from the FAA's website.

Lubbock

2007 577,587
2008 562,241
2009 534,818
2010 508,858
2011 503,580
2012 475,680

Midland

2007 491,847
2008 488,928
2009 423,801
2010 445,043
2011 474,423
2012 497,193

It looks like both airports were declining, probably due to national factors ( airlines reducing flights because of the recession and maybe fuel costs), but Midland turned the corner in 2010, but Lubbock hasn't yet. Once the economy truly recovers Lubbock's numbers may rise again rapidly.
