Surprising given how much growth they've experienced the past year. Guess they're bailing before HEB comes.

The good news is, United in Lubbock will reportedly keep its name. As for the locations in Wichita Falls and Abilene, well, I'm not sure yet. The deal here is similar to the Safeway/Tom Thumb/Randall's mergings of yesteryear and may be done the same way.

The local news reported that United has experienced record earnings for the past 4 years. My theory: they are selling while profits are at their peak before HEB moves in.

RR2005. I think this post is spot on. Usually people aren't smart enough to sell a business or investment has a high value. Usually its when the value decreases and the future doesn't look so good that people will bail. I'd give the owners of United for making what I think is a very smart business decision, sell the chain before Costco opens and HEB starts to come into the market.

United said in the paper, "nothing will change". Don't bet any money on that one.

A friend of mine told me today that he heard that United and HEB had a gentleman's agreement for years to stay out of each others "territory". But apparently United broke this in the last few years. HEB appears to be ready to pay them back the favor. United's owner probably figured out the future and sold out.
