A couple of years ago I sold a pickup truck to a young couple from out of state who had recently taken a jobs as managers in one of Lubbock's hotels. New hotels help the Lubbock area economy in a lot of ways.

Is there any info on where they're going? It would be great to see them go in the Campus/Downtown area.

According to lubbockintheloop.com, there's the Courtyard by Marriott that's still under construction near Jones Stadium, a Cobblestone Hotel in the works for the airport area, two on the SW side near Canyon West, and two that are listed without known locations. The last are supposed to open this year, so I would imagine that we would know where they are soon.

Is this due to the oil boom in TX?

I think, as the article said, it's more because of the growth in programs at Texas Tech. There is some oil-related activity in and around Lubbock, but not on the scale of Midland/Odessa. I think many more hotels (maybe close to 3x?) are planned for the "Petroplex."

Now, that would be a switch. I'd like to see quite a few other things happening in North Lubbock and the I-27 corridor. They could use more gas stations, restaurants, other businesses, and traffic signals.

And Canyon West is long overdue for new projects. The Marsha Sharp Freeway is going to be taking further shape.

The city is also getting an increasing number of conventions happening there, in addition to new business ventures. In the future, there will be increased tourism with the opening of the new Bush National College Baseball Hall of Fame's new facility. No longer is Lubbock alive just when Tech plays football at Jones, so the necessity of additional hotel space is justified.
