Lubbock, TX (Panhandle: home, employment, neighborhood)

Anyone on here ever live there? If so, did you like it?

What are some of the pros/cons of living there? What is the employment outlook right now for the city?

I haven't "lived" there, but I've visited on many occasions.

The climate is on the dry, non-humid side. It has lots of sunshine year-round, and has four seasons to an extent. The quality of life is great for a city its size, and is growing at a good pace. The large university adds many cultural and sporting events, and is also expanding. The airport has jet service to large hubs.

The drawbacks include the driving distance from larger cities, the occasional (a few times a year) blowing dust, and severe weather in the spring. It's pretty flat, but it gets hilly just to the east of the city.

I currently live in Lubbock, and I very much enjoy it. The employment opportunities are tight rght now as they are everywhere, but Lubbock has fared the recession very well, with one of the most stable housing markets in the nation and low unemployment rate (about half the national average). Here's my list of pros and cons:
Pros:
good size- just large enough to have many of the advantages if big cities, but still maintains a friendly small town feel
friendly people
amazing schools
athletic and cultural events from Tech and LCU
clean
parks with lakes in almost every neighborhood
weather- dry but not too dry; fairly mild winter without scorching heat in the summer
diverse for a city its size
about four hours to skiing, one hour to hiking/biking, one hour or less to water sports
affordable
laid-back

Cons:
scenery- just flat farmland, but the city itself is nice
somewhat isolated
some people can be too "churchy", but most people are very genuine
watch out for college-aged drivers
weather- very changeable, windy, occasional severe storms

I lived in Lubbock back in the very early 90's while I was attending Texas Tech. I really liked Lubbock and have gone back there many times since I graduated (mostly for Tech football games). Anyway, when I was there, as mentioned above, Lubbock is large enough to have many of the things you'll find in a larger city (including great restaurants, etc.) but without the hassles of a larger city (not as much traffic, etc.). The people there are very friendly as well. It is a little remote so travel by car to the larger cities is a bigger hassle, it's windy often, and the weather can be very cold in the winter. The Lubbock area doesn't have much natural scenery but the city itself looks nice and clean overall. I would recommend it as a nice place to live and I certainly wouldn't mind living there again.

I live here and its a good size city.I doesn't take long to get out of town with interstate 27.the loop can be a hassle esp. southwest Lubbock.the Marsha Sharp freeway is nice to get on and get across town fast.I don't like south slide road esp.from 50th street to 98th.Its easy enough to get to places around town like anything on indiana and quaker streets.I don't care for the const. going on on west 4th. at loop 289 like to avoid it that part of town too.I don't mind living here but would like to move to a duplex away from the Texas Tech area.I have a job in the medical field so I would recommend looking into that.

Lubbock has changed significantly in the past twenty five years but I owned a home in SW Lubbock in the 1980s and back then I had a bumper sticker on my car that parroted the words of George H. Bush, " I LOVE LUBBOCK." I still prefer Lubbock over any of the many cities I have lived and visited although I prefer now to view the "city lights" from my rural home north of the City.

If the inquiry you are making is legitimate, I'll be glad to answer. Lubbock is a fantastic place, and like many other Texas cities, the employment outlook is as good as most places in our state. Probably not quite as abundant, though, but it depends on what you are looking for. Are you planning to move to the city?? Can you expand, please, on your subject matter a little bit so we'll know what you're asking for??

I'm looking for work right now in Lubbock and the market is tight for everything less medical. I have a job offer in SanAngelo but I would rather find something in Lubbock.

I lived in Lubbock for several years, came for a job offer. Went to school at Texas Tech and worked there, nice folks, very nice university. The area is very flat, hot and at times windy and dusty. But is filled with friendly and helpful people, is a good economy. Also seems very peaceful. Would do some travel on weekends up the Panhandle, and it surely has its own serene beauty. Also becomes more hilly the further north, as well as having canyonlands, which are strikingly beautiful. Am in a different part of the country presently, and do miss it.

It is a minimum wage town with beer stores and bad drivers.
