Our daughter was accepted to Texas Tech and we chose to drive this past weekend to visit the campus. It was also for my daughter and her best friend ( Tech student already) to walk around campus and physically look at the residence halls, to figure out which would be the most convenient to class for them, since they will be room mates. The campus is huge, and they chose a great residence hall but am not sure of the location for walking to the streets that border the school with all the eateries.

While living on campus, she would like to get a job singing for tips. We noticed the restaurants that surround the campus could be good for her to sing in if they allow it. She sings where we live now, singing in a sandwich shop. Is there any places around Lubbock she could work singing? Any sandwich shops that do that? Pizza places? The safety walking from the campus to those places with her music gear?

She does not have a car to go to the local mall or to the super market and wondered if the bus system is fairly safe to use if she had to use it for a particular reason.

I also wanted to express how much we LOVE Lubbock. We were treated well and loved the small talk with everyone we engaged with! I miss that, don't get enough of that where I live now.

Very impressed with Lubbock, great shopping, places to dine and your IMAX is amazing over at the mall. When we go back, we hope to tour your museums and shop a little more.

Texas Tech is not my alma mater so I know little about it. I just wanted to welcome your daughter to the Lubbock area. People who love music are always welcome in a town that has produced some of the best.

I don't know much about the music scene around campus but I have never seen the sandwich shops or the pizza place have singers in them. However, many of the close bars do.

The area right around campus is pretty safe. There is a Walmart about 1 mile from campus. I would not walk around there at night. There is a supermarket in Tech Terrace which is a pretty close walk from the south side of campus. On school days, there is a free bus that runs from campus through Tech Terrace so she can get there for free. Along with the supermarket there is a nice coffee shop and pizza place.

You can get the bus from stops around campus to the mall. I would call the service - infrequent but doable. I assume more than likely she will make friends with someone who has a car and that is the way they will get around.

Have fun at Tech. It is a fun school.

Sorry I haven't replied back earlier, but I'm glad that your experience with Lubbock has been great.

Since it's been a couple years since you chimed in with this, can you give us a follow-up? Is your daughter still singing anywhere?

Also, if you haven't already, check out the West Loop. There's a lot of new development and activity along the stretch between Quaker and 34th.
