As of September 2017, Lubbock's unemployment rate is at 2.9%. Workers will be in great demand, particularly those in construction.

Got down to 2.7% in November, putting it among the lowest in Texas:

Here are just a few buildings currently under construction: TTU’s $77 million Experimental Sciences Building II and the $91 million Health Sciences Center addition, and of course the $153 million Buddy Holly Hall Downtown (which mentioned the shortage). Planned big projects include Tech’s Womble Basketball Practice Facility ($23 million budgeted as of now) and expansions to Jones AT&T Stadium and the Football Training Facility. Was just announced that alumnus Cody Campbell of Double Eagle Energy donated a “significant” sum to the university for the last two projects. Previous estimates put the total for those at over $60 million or so.

More on the stadium & FTF expansions:

“I’m guessing that the south end zone will be approximately a $50 million initiative, and I would believe the Football Training Facility will be a $15 million endeavor,” Hocutt said. “Those are very wild guesses on my part, but I’d be surprised if I’m not somewhere in the ballpark.”

I am originally fro Chicago, IL and moved to California years ago. I still have family and friends in the Chicago area and many friends in Northern CA. People I know from both areas of the country are moving out because they are retiring and want to move elsewhere more affordable. Likewise many younger people are in the same boat. The costs of housing(specifically CA) and property taxes in other areas of the country have risen so dramatically that is has become unaffordable to maintain cars, homes, family and other responsibilities. Also the political climate in many states are pushing people out. ie: 2nd amendment, freedom of lifestyle and SO MANY other reasons. I looked at moving to OR or WA but they have the same political ideals that the politicians running CA(into the ground) have. So it is a must for many people like myself to move where I can buy a property and live within my retirement budget.

If you an't afford to live in the area, then move to an area you can afford to live!

Article on cultural centers around the US and their economic impact on cities:

https://www.bdcnetwork.com/cultural-...wntown-renewal

One of the featured places is the Buddy Holly Hall construction project, even though it's not supposed to open for another 19 or so months. This stuck out to me:

Quote:
(LEPAA Executive Director Rob) Allison says that another $250 million in new construction for downtown Lubbock, including mixed-use residential and hotels, “could be announced within the next 18 to 24 months.”
Also, this:
Quote:
(Bart) Reagor concedes that some of Lubbock’s redevelopment might have happened without the PAC. “But not all of it, by a long shot. When you have $150 million committed to a performing arts center, that wakes people up.”
