If the stats are based upon per capita figures (which, apparently, the site used), then the pronouncement is misleading.

I graduated from Texas Tech a long time ago (1975), in a galaxy far away. I also spent a summer in Lubbock around 1978. I lived around campus, but never had any problems.

These "infotainment sites" are always publishing lists, e.g., "top ten cities" is a very common one you find in magazines, etc. Places to pursue outdoor recreations, places to retire, places for best quality of life, etc.

The lists change from year to year. So I guess you move to a city because it made the top ten list for retirees to live in, and then it is no longer on the list the next year!

They usually have some "facts", but sometimes the rest is spin.

I lived in Lubbock for 11 years and moved out last year. They have crime, like most cities their size, places like Dallas are potentially far more dangerous than Lbk. In fact, the murder rate is down. Lbk has negatives but the crime isnt that bad as long as you stay mostly outside the loop.

If you could see a map of violent crime incidences, you would see that these crimes are concentrated in just a few small pockets of the city. And they always seem to occur in the wee hours of the night between parties who know each other and drugs are involved. As long as you're not involved in that lifestyle, you've got nothing to worry about.
