What is the attitude in general toward the gay community? Does one need to keep sexual identify pretty secret or is there tolerance and acceptance?

According to this data map, Lubbock is pretty gay friendly with 4.50 same sex couple per 1k house hold and 20.5 % of them raising kids. That stats is considering top rate in the red state Texas in that category besides
the big 4 cities.

For the details, you would need some of their residents' opinions. But as it can happens anywhere, this factor will largely depend on where you live and the people who live next to you. That's what matters. As it usually come out, bigger city, more upscale neighborhood, more educated people,... tend to be more acceptant.

I dont know if Id say Lubbock is gay friendly, but I would say that I think its gay tolerant. I dont think youd run into a bunch of problems there but I also wouldnt look to start a pride parade either.

Being there's a large major Division 1 university located in Lubbock, I would guess that Lubbock is a little more tolerant of gays and other alternative lifestyles than any where else in West Texas all the way to the "liberal paradise" of the Denver/Boulder region/metro.
