This thread is a bit of a segue from the one oobanks recently submitted regarding the I-75-I-475 interchanges both north and south.

As someone who admittedly has not traveled this section of Georgia in many, many years, I have to say that using I-75 thru Macon to go north/south was never my option simply because it was not the shortest route, and it always took me out of my way.

Assuming most I-75 travelers are heading south to Florida, or north to Atlanta (or further), why would anyone normally want to take a longer detour through Macon?

Presumably, some of the I-75/I-16 southbound traffic is due to mid-western travelers heading to Savannah or to I-95 and down the east coast to Florida, but is traffic through the I-75/I-16 Macon interchange so heavy that it warrants having as many as 7 lanes each way (as some on this forum have claimed)?

The 7 lanes is for more than freeway traffic. They are reworking 2nd Street and Coliseum Dr. exits and bridges so it would consist of several access roads as well linking it to the I-16/I-75 interchange, more of a spaghetti Junction of sorts. Also Tons of Freight Traffic comes from Savannah through Macon on I-16.

Thanx, oobanks. I hadn't considered the impact of semi-trucks traveling along I-16. Boy, I can only imagine how busy the interchange might be.
