Looking through the agenda for the Macon-Bibb Planning Board's 27 February meeting, I see that a Widner and Associates is proposing to redevelop several buildings at 340/310 Sixth Street and 454 Terminal Avenue. The old industrial building located at 340 Sixth Street will be redeveloped into a residential building. The proposed plan includes greenspace, off-street parking, landscaping, street trees, cyclist paths, and pedestrian walkways. The property at 310 Sixth Street would be developed with new parking and landscaped islands. The facade would remain similar to current with interior spaces modified to the needs of potential commercial tenants. The property at 454 Terminal Avenue is also proposed for rezoning to accommodate uses more in line with mixed-use development at 340 and 310 Sixth Street within the existing buildings on the property. Me too! This area has so much potential with the amount of vacant land and old industrial buildings, this area could really become a nice eclectic area for the city.
The parcels are to the east of Terminal Station across the railroad tracks, according to the commission’s staff report. The area is a historic industrial area. The warehouse-storage buildings on the parcels range from 34,000 square feet and 18,000 square feet down to 2,400 square feet. Some were built about 1900 and some in the 1950s to 1960s. A portion of the buildings are occupied.
The applicant’s preliminary plan calls for 18 to 20 apartment units in the existing building at 340 Sixth St.
“If this development proceeds, the applicant proposes to upgrade existing infrastructure and provide amenities including greenspace, off-street parking, landscaping, street trees, cyclist paths and pedestrian walkways as well as the addition of new parking and landscape islands at 310 Sixth St.,” the report said. “The applicant anticipates 454 Terminal Ave will be converted to a mixed-use commercial/retail/residential development, at a future date yet to be determined.”
