The County Commission is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a $550,000 contract for phase two of work to the Central City skate park. The skate park has become a popular destination for skateboard and rollerblading enthusiasts since opening earlier this year, and this next round of improvements could become a larger attraction for events, Macon-Bibb leaders said.

Funding for phase two would come from 2017 special purpose local option sales tax proceeds. The skate park’s first phase was $400,000 out of $3.7 million of improvements to Central City Park.

Contractor California Skateparks would build a 10,000-square-foot park consisting of a flow bowl that “will support all levels of skating and possibly be a draw for a pro level contest,” the agreement said.

One tournament is scheduled at the park later this month, but even more could be on the way, Mayor Robert Reichert said at last week’s commission meeting.

“The Tony Hawk Foundation and Nike skateboarding team have all indicated interest and enthusiasm,” he said. “They say we could have tournaments here and attract people from hundreds of miles away. They say it’ll be the nicest skatepark between Washington and Miami.”

Well, I don't think a skate park ever influenced much, but it can't be a bad thing....

I think that I am going to check out this newly constructed skate park this Saturday. Where an event is to be held called Mactown Smackdown.
I think that it is interesting that professional athletes have gotten involved in help to build ball fields and skate parks. Such as Tony Hawk investment in the skate park in Central City Park downtown and Cal Ripkin investment in an astro turf softball field park behind Matilda Hartley Elementary School.

As I am on the subject of recreational activities for the community I for one like the Freedom Park Splost project. A lot of people near the park mostly people of hue don't like the idea that the park will be demolishing its swimming pool. Well for one a lot of people just leave their kids there anyway not even knowing that the children can't swim. Freedom Park just built a boxing ring with a 600 seated capacity boxing venue inside of the gym. Boxing just like softball is a sport too. The city gave the citizens a boxing venue, so a swimming pool upgrade would be nice. Though I think that it is a good say so.

There is a new community center about to be built on Log Cabin Drive. Inside Filmore Thomas park. If any citizens are so concerned about losing the swimming pool at Freedom Park then I think that you should voice your take to the county commissioner over the construction of the future Fimore Thomas community center.

Splash pads are far better than pools in this instance. The pools are only open from Memorial Day until school starts around August 1. That is a lot of upkeep for 2 months. Chemicals, lifeguards, maintenance, plus people have to pay albeit not much. It is just too much for what it is. Splsh pads are relatively cheap, no lifeguards needed, they can run during all warm months, all ages friendly, etc. For the limited rec dollars we have, splash pads are a much better use of funds.

i went to the showdown yesterday to watch. man some of those guys have some serious game. there were a lot of people there had 2 food trucks. glad the rec dept put up a shaded area with stands. with how hot it was there was no way i would have stayed as long as i did. one thing i think should be addressed during a event such as this EMS would have been nice to be @ the site. a young girl broke her arm during a open skate between events. i was surprised how one traveled just for this event. he was from Germany & came just for this event.
